Bad coil?

Hi Richard I will share my tried and true method for diagnosing problems: If it won't start, make a list of everything involved with starting the motor. Now eliminate the obvious things like starter motor, etc. Pick the least expensive of the parts left on the list and replace it. Keep doing this until it starts to your liking. We came dum, we go lernt! Ernie

The kickstand on my JCL MP250A seems to work great. Never had a problem.

That's an eye opener! I always thought trikes should have two wheels in front. I'm glad he wasn't hurt. Looks like a tough little car.

Thursday 12:23PM:
I put on my leathers, gloves and full face helmet and off I went to see just what these newly installed(correctly this time) sliders will do for me. Simply put, it runs like a cat trying to cover crap on a marble floor.
Power comes on sooner at lower rpm. Midrange is steady, even on hills. Acceleration is a little better from 40mph. I was not able to check out the top end as I don't live near any interstate highways.
My opinion: NICE! ;D
One thing I did notice when I pulled back into the garage. I could smell hot exhaust. This may have been due to the cold temperatures(37 degrees) or maybe the sliders make the motor run hotter.

I took the scooter out for a brief test ride tonight. Everything seemed to be functioning OK. We have several days of nasty cold, rainy weather coming. I'm anxious to take it out and put some miles on it when the weather breaks. More to come...

I probably should have left well enough alone but I got this strange compulsive desire to take one last crack at installing these $%^&%&^ sliders. I may have discovered why I had trouble the last two tries. I wasn't holding the squash plate all the way against the variator and the sliders got knocked out of position during install. I tested it on the center stand and I even tried to take a ride but as I backed out of the garage it was raining so I almost did a wheelie getting back into the garage. I think maybe the third time was a charm. Ernie

I took the scooter for a nice long ride today. It ran great. Strangely, after I wired in the electric enricher voltage cut off switch, the first time I put on the left turnsignal it blinked very fast as in a bad ground. After five blinks, it slowed to the normal blink. The right turnsignal did exactly the same thing. Funny thing is they each did it only once and have been working right ever since. Does the voltage regulator in these things use some kind of adaptive strategy and correct for resistance changes? Ernie

It is 37 degrees out tonight and I started the scoot using my enricher switch. I gotta tell ya, I'm insufferably pleased with myself. It never missed a beat! ;D ;D ;D

I have been wanting to control the enricher so it doesn't lean out until the scooter reaches operating temperature. Today I installed a SPST rocker switch on the left access panel just behind the floorboard. I cut the heavy yellow wire on the battery side of the enricher plug and used wire nuts to connect the two leads of the switch to the two cut yellow leads. Now I can interupt the 3.15 volts going to the enricher by throwing the switch to the O position. When the bike reaches normal operating temperature, I flip the switch to the l position which sends 3.15v to the enricher. In about a minute, the motor returns to normal idle 1,800 rpm. Ernie

Richard I had pretty much the same problem as you do. If after turning the A/F mixture screw all the way in and backing it out counterclockwise to 2.5 turns, set the idle to 1800 rpm hot and you've replaced the vacuum and fuel lines, you are still having trouble, your carb is probably the problem. I didn't feel like messing with a cheap Chinese carburetor so I simply replaced mine and the bike came alive as if by magic. I've seen these carbs on the for $46 new. The only thing I could improve on is the enricher doesn't stay on long enough. I could put a SPST switch on the 12v line to the enricher so I can hold it on until the bike reaches operating temp. Now, it warms up before I hit the first stop sign in the neighborhood. The only time it will stall is at home, on the center stand when the enricher kicks off before the temp gauge reaches normal temp. If you hop on and ride, that shouldn't be a problem once it reaches operating temp. Ernie

I must be stupid. I tried putting the sliders in just the way the drawings and photos show but I can't seem to get it right. The second time was so bad, one of the sliders cracked. I loaded the variator back up with grease and reinstalled the original weights which work just fine. I think I'm cured!

I took the scoot out for a short 15 mile ride this afternoon. The scooter is definitely quieter and vibrates less. It seems a little sluggish off the line but woooo hooooo, the acceleration has improved. It still feels like it needs to wear in for a while but I think I like it so far. Ernie ;D

Does anyone know of a better gas cap for these scooters? Mine doesn't feel like it's securely latched down when I tighten it closed. If I pry one side up hard enough, I can make it come halfway off.
