As far as the octane number is concerned, I spent a good hour once googling into that, and learned that US octane numbers are an average of research octane and "M" octane (forgot what the M actually stands for), whereas Asia and some other places use just one of those figures -- research octane, I believe it was. Point being, everything I read in several places said that our ubiquitous 87-octane regular is every bit as good as what the Chinese call 93 octane. So if you're on a budget, no obvious reason to buy the super stuff, although for a typical scooter tank you're probably talking less than half a buck difference. On ethanol versus no ethanol, though, I have no opinion except I too wish the Feds would quit meddling.
Of course one could always swoop by the closest small airport and tank up with 100LL avgas .... (joke, people -- I'm sure there are engineering reasons why that would not be smart).

When I log into any given classroom, some threads will show a "NEW" flag. Was wondering if that flag is associated with my specific logon, i.e., is telling me there's something new in that thread that *** Ellpee *** hasn't read, or whether it's generic, i.e., telling the whole world that something new has been posted to the thread in the past xxx hours or yyy days. Don't know how to explain it better than that.

Hey JR, is that flag person-specific, as in I only see it if there's stuff *** I *** haven't read yet, or generic, as in new within the last xxx hours or days?

Hate to hijack a thread, but I have to say all these MC designations are confusing. My 2011 Roketa paperwork says either MC-54B-250 or MC-54-250B -- sorry, don't have it in front of me at the moment -- but it very definitely has the 244cc vertical engine.
And for the original poster, best I can recall, on my 2011 Roketa the radiator filler cap is not under the BATTERY cover, it's under a second little access panel under the seat, to the rear of the battery cover. Mine also has stickers on it that say YY250T, though as others have noted, that designation is not to be relied upon.

I wrapped my "green" wire (don't really know what color it was) around the plug wire, which also seems to work okay. I didn't have the other two, as mine runs on what is alleged to be a five-year battery, after which I throw it away and buy a new one. If yours doesn't run on a battery then the other two presumably power it, as well as its internal light if it has one. On my other scoot I installed a voltage meter, and it had separate wires for the light (which I didn't bother to connect).

Wonder if Jim has ever considered moving his shop to AZ or NM? Darn cold up there this time of year (says ellpee as he sits in Ruidoso, looking forward to two days of heavy snow this weekend). No snow in Tucson though, at least not below 4000' or so. Sit on your patio and gaze up at the snow-capped mountains, then go scootering.

For the benefit of the general student population, any of you gurus have any idea why he would be burning through regulators at that rate?

Just a thought, picture is fuzzy but it looks to me like it MIGHT be possible to file a flat spot on each side, good enough to give the pliers something to grab ahold of.

Dodged a bullet, maybe. Put oil in the Magnum, fired it up, no starting problems, no funny noises, no oil smoke out the exhaust. Knock wood. Guess I won't be 100% certain until I take it on the road again, but looks good so far. Another lesson learned at Good Ol' Scooter U.

The temp gauge didn' rise much above the startup reading. As to why, I drained it because I had reached the 1000 mile mark, then figured why fill it again now, I'll just wait until spring, since I won't be running it again until then. Bad assumption, of course, something came up and here I am, six months ahead of projection. The gas tank I left completely full and augmented with that StarTron additive everybody seems to love, because our one and only local motorcycle/scooter/atv mechanic said that's the way to go.
HOW exactly will I know? Noises? Oil leaks? What should I be watching for? And what should I do if I notice anything? Do they still sell that "Motor Honey" stuff Paul Harvey used to hype back in the day?

Unexpectedly I'm back in Ruidoso where the Magnum was in winter hibernation, and Sunday I thought, what the heck, while I'm here I might as well at least run the engine for a few minutes. So I hooked up the battery, fired 'er up, and ran her for maybe five minutes, max ten. M mostly slow, putt-putt-putt idle, maybe 15 seconds of 2000 rpm or so, then shut down.
PROBLEM: totally forgot I had drained the oil!
I heard no awful noises or anything, but obviously I'm concerned. How much if any damage did I do to the innards of the engine? I'm going to put some oil in today and run it again for a few minutes, and hope for the best, but what do y'all think about the possible dire consequences of my forgetfulness? And is there anything I can do to minimize same?

Steve beat me to it. When I had to buy brake pads for my Magnum they came from an ATV parts house, and the one cycle repair shop in our little village actually has more ATVs on its lot that cycles. Don't know where you are, but if there's any hunting or off-roading going on, those are the guys most likely to be able to help, I'd bet.
