Bad pump or vacuum leak? One way to test is to take the fuel line off the carb and hit the starter (be sure you are prepared with something to catch to fuel that will or won't come out, depending on how the test goes). When it cranks, if you are getting a steady draw on the tank the gas will be pulsing out in strong bursts. I know because when i did it I was blasted in the face with gas. Based on your description i wonder if that stream will be good at first and then quickly die. That will identify the problem as fuel delivery. then we can go into subparts of the system to test.

Alley- I'm sure you're right - I only wrote that to say that I have it that way in the same scoot and do not have a fuel problem.

FWIW, I kept the filter between the tank and the pump and ditched the one by the carb. Also, these scoots have vented gas caps.

I just checked mine and though its hard to see well it looks pretty full if not totally full. Have you replaced the crappy chinese filter? If I remember correctly we can use a Purolator #F21124.
UPDATE - I found the old scootdawg thread. here is what you can get that will work much better and won't fail in 5,000 miles:
WIX #33011; NAPA #3011; CarQuest #86011; EFI #GF95; Purolator #F21124; FRAM #G4164; AC Delco #GF461; BOSCH #71936; Luber Finer FF2314/G6529

Great job Alleyoop and JMI - I still get such a kick at these virtual mechanic's consultations. It's the kind of thing I love most about the internet. Safe riding to you both.

You might want to do a good pdi if it wasn't done. I got mine used too and the guy hadn't done anything. I changed the oil, antifreeze, fuel filter and hose connectors, as well replacing the air lines and fuel lines with good american rubber secured with zip ties. If you haven't you won't believe your eyes - the chinese lines are like drinking straws compared to good rubber. I saved a sample to show people, and two years later its hard as a rock.
I have a pdf of the yamaha yp250 manual which will help you work on the engine if you want. I also have pdfs of some good panel assembly guides and pdi guides for this scoot from the old site. The narratives are still there on the site but the pics were since deleted. If you want them or have any questions please feel free to send me a pm with your email or just post here. -mike

I seem to top out at 65, sometimes less. I weigh 230 and have a big Givi windshield on the scoot. I know people talk all the time about going faster on a 260, but for me, when I check my speed by gps, I get up to around 55-60 pretty quickly and then slooooowly rise. My speedo puts me at 80+!!

The 871 was definitely too long. The 856 is so much quieter too - no flopping around. when the new fan comes I'll take the variator apart and give the slider channels a good cleaning. the vid I watched said to give the inside of the variator a hit of brake cleaner and use a brush to get out any oil or dirt. It occurred to me that all I did was wipe the inside with a towel. The vibration might have been from a slider getting hung up on some old grease. I was topping out around 55 too, so maybe that is consistent with a hung up weight too.

I posted on another related thread that my cheapo 871 shredded after less than 1000 miles. I just put on my 856 gates belt (and without removing the variator this time --thanks JR!), only to find that the disintegration of the 871 seems to have taken the tips of most of the variator fan blades with it. I saw this thread which says flat out not to ride with broken fan blades, and also has JR's source for the new fan: thescooterprofessor.proboards.com/thread/2068 Back on the road soon enough!!
