here's a new one for me. I recently replaced my rollers with sliders and put in a longer belt (871 in place of the 859) on my Linhai clone. The belt's been in for about 100 miles now. When I get up to about 55mph I get a very high vibration in my seat like a massager you see in the mall. Its so fast it almost tickles. I know its not the wheel. As soon as I come off the throttle even a drop and lower the rpm it stops instantly. The other odd thing is that the belt makes a flop sound at idle. From what I can read I think its called "belt slap." Think it will go away? Bad belt? Any insight appreciated as always.

Longer belt if it's worn any at all is going to slap some. I tried the 871 and I prefer the 856 especially with my sliders. Vibration two things come to mid quickly:
Loose variator nut Slider stuck or not sliding out all the way or possibly upside down.
Make sure each slider freely moves in the variator tracks nicely and remember NO grease, sliders are self lubricating.

Thanks for your insight as always. I'll open her back up this weekend and have a look.
The biggest advantage of the 871 that I see is that I can get it off without taking off the variator. That makes it key for on-road repairs where you don't have an impact wrench.

I saw that video when I was researching how to do the change and I could not get my 856 off that way, but could get the 871. I'll try it again with someone helping me. Thanks for posting.

What makes it easier is getting the belt to go deep into the clutch. If you can spread it out then with the belt all the way in, it will give you a lot more slack on the variator end. A new belt is tough but get it good and warm before you try.

Looks to me like a couple clamps on the clutch end of that process would help spread the pulley and hold it that way. Just a thought. Thanks for this thread, I'll certainly remember it when I do my next belt check.

I posted on another related thread that my cheapo 871 shredded after less than 1000 miles. I just put on my 856 gates belt (and without removing the variator this time --thanks JR!), only to find that the disintegration of the 871 seems to have taken the tips of most of the variator fan blades with it. I saw this thread which says flat out not to ride with broken fan blades, and also has JR's source for the new fan: thescooterprofessor.proboards.com/thread/2068 Back on the road soon enough!!

Thanks JR. For someone like me who is late to wrenching its the main way I learn.

Yea, I think it is because of the longer belt the 871 is about 3/8 longer than the 859 that is quite a bit and is to loose. Alleyoop

The 871 was definitely too long. The 856 is so much quieter too - no flopping around. when the new fan comes I'll take the variator apart and give the slider channels a good cleaning. the vid I watched said to give the inside of the variator a hit of brake cleaner and use a brush to get out any oil or dirt. It occurred to me that all I did was wipe the inside with a towel. The vibration might have been from a slider getting hung up on some old grease. I was topping out around 55 too, so maybe that is consistent with a hung up weight too.
