I ended up replacing the carburetor. No more gas smell and it runs good now too.

I almost forgot...should I use red loctite on the variator nut when reassembling?

Do you think a Harbor Freight electric impact wrench will be able to loosen and retighten the variator nut? Should I just use a chain clamp, a 1/2" drive socket wrench and a 5lb hammer?

Sliders

The sliders came the other day and the other dumb bunnies sent me a complete gasket kit instead of a drive belt so I wait another week.
Now I'm wondering exactly what installing sliders will do for the scooter. Is it even worth the aggravation? Nice time to think about it, I know but I was hoping to maybe reduce vibration a little, increase the low end grunt and maybe add a little top end. Mostly I was hoping this upgrade would quiet the scooter down considerably under hard throttle.

I am going to take your advice. Now I need some warmer weather to run this tank empty. Should take another 80 miles or so. Thanks Alleyoop!

My scooter sat for a week with stabil in the gas which had a chance to run through the system before I shut it down last ride. Today it cranked and cranked and sputtered and cranked and sputtered. I tried giving it a little gas but it still only sputtered and died. I removed the enricher and it looked ok. Wiring connections were good to the enricher. I must have cranked for five solid minutes before giving up. Then, a few minutes later, I cranked it some more and it began to start. I nursed the rpm's up over 2,500 and held it there. After a few minutes it would idle on it's own. I shut it down and poured a small amount of Seafoam in the gas tank and started it again and took a ride. I whipped it hopeing to blow out whatever may have caused scooter not to get gas. It ran fine. It idled fine, right at 1,800rpm where it should be. I put about 10 miles on it and took it home. I'm letting it sit and cool off so I can try to start it cold. I'm beginning to lose faith in this scooter. Could it be it hates Stabil? Ernie

I'm getting ready to install sliders in my variator and a new drive belt. Is there anything I should know to do the job right? Also, what the heck are "NEW U-SLIDES"? Do they come with the new sliders?
I suppose since my scooter has under 400 miles, I can use the original U-Slides that came in the variator.

powered by a high-efficiency, 700cc parallel-Twin, driving through either a second-generation Dual Clutch Transmission or a six-speed conventional transmission. You can choose your poison like the VFR 1200 which comes with either a manual or automatic. To shift or not to shift, that is the question. I just gave it a good close look and I have bigger questions. Where does the rider put his feet? I looks like it has a floorboard. If that's the case where does the rear brake pedal go for the shifty version? Up through the floorboard like a Helix or Stella? What does the other side look like? Where do you put the shift lever on a bike with no footpegs? It may have electric shifting like the big Burgman.

That thing is beautiful. It's almost pretty enough for me to go and get a new hip replacement so I can get my leg over the seat. Ernie

I ordered a Gates 856-23-30 drive belt to go along with the new sliders. Who knows what can happen to a Chinese belt after sitting in a crate for four years?
I also believe that the current belt does a lot of flopping and banging against the case. This could possibly be the noise I have been complaining about under acceleration.
This is like waiting for a baby...

Thanks guys but I was hoping to have a belt and sliders before I took it apart.
I may name my scooter Sum Ting Wong. What a great vanity plate if it weren't so long.
