I'm getting ready to install sliders in my variator and a new drive belt. Is there anything I should know to do the job right? Also, what the heck are "NEW U-SLIDES"? Do they come with the new sliders?
I suppose since my scooter has under 400 miles, I can use the original U-Slides that came in the variator.

thescooterprofessor.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=250ccvt&action=display&thread=216You'll see the "U" slides on the bak variator plate and yes if your kit doesn't come with new ones the old ones will be fine provided they are not broke. Clean, clean, clean, no grease with sliders! Put a small amount on the inside of the "U" slides and grease the center shaft (boss) with a good lithium grease, not to much and don't get it on the face plates. Pay attention to when you put it back together to keep all the sliders in place.

The sliders came the other day and the other dumb bunnies sent me a complete gasket kit instead of a drive belt so I wait another week.
Now I'm wondering exactly what installing sliders will do for the scooter. Is it even worth the aggravation? Nice time to think about it, I know but I was hoping to maybe reduce vibration a little, increase the low end grunt and maybe add a little top end. Mostly I was hoping this upgrade would quiet the scooter down considerably under hard throttle.

Ernie it will do a little of it all. You bought 12 gram sliders so you'll enjoy a little more snap on take off, you'll pull hills better at more rpm and speed and you may get a tad of top end not much a win win all the way around. The sliders shift smoother and with the variator clean and properly put together they'll be queit.
When you open up the CVT area be sure to clean it all out good, a air hose is nice and just take your time assembling it all. You can tie up the filter and run it with the cover off to see how it all works and make sure the variator and clutch are working nicely together by revving it up and down some.

Ernie, make sure you tighten the variator nut good and tight. I use a impact wrench. If it is a bit loose it will spin that nut right off and your fan will go flying off with it. So start it and keep a finger on the kill switch in case it starts to spin off. 12 gram sliders are well worth installing as JR said.

Do you think a Harbor Freight electric impact wrench will be able to loosen and retighten the variator nut? Should I just use a chain clamp, a 1/2" drive socket wrench and a 5lb hammer?

Some people have had good luck with them and if it's rated at a good torque it'll probably do the trick, but if it doesn't let go pretty quickly then by all means use a good chain wrench and a good fitting socket with a long type breaker bar handle. I'd forget the hammer!

I almost forgot...should I use red loctite on the variator nut when reassembling?

Ernie, the electric Harbor Freight impact wrench works great. I use a 19mm wrench to tighten it as much as I can first to make sure the nut is going on right and not cross threaded, then I take the impact wrench to it. Usually 5 pops and it's tight. I would use the blue loctite, I think the red is too strong. Don't forget you need to remove it again one day.
