[replyingto=rapidjim]rapidjim[/replyingto]The good news for me is that he doesn't have his $450 yet! Alley suggested that I drain the tank again and then tune the carb. He is without question an expert on all things trike but I will take a moment here to say that I have drained the tank again and replaced the carb with a new unit and still have the same issue. That issue being that she wont rev beyond 4.5K. Rolls up smooth as glass till about 4.2k and then gets rough and starts cutting out. Acts like a rev limiter is kicking in, but I have the NCY with 4 degree advance and no rev limiter. Don't know much at all about carbs, but I since this is the second one with the same issue, I was wondering if maybe it could be a valve problem and not the carb? Again, I do not question Alley as he has probably forgotten more than I'll ever know, but 2 carbs with the same issue? I have also replaced the coil, plug, fuel and vacuum lines, fuel pump and filter. This is a new trike with less than 40 miles on it.

[replyingto=alleyoop]alleyoop[/replyingto]Thanks, Alley! I will try that after the mech looks at again. For that money this thing should fly! Could have installed a BBK and carb for about the same. If I call him back, does that make me a stalker?

[replyingto=alleyoop]alleyoop[/replyingto]Well, the gas was orange and I used up all of the lawnmower and Cushman stuff I learned as a kid. Problem is, it does start and idle well, but it won't rev past about 4500 rpm and I have to sneak up on her to get that. 21mph isn't safe on the street. Guess I'll just try to drive it out of her till Tuesday when the shop opens. We didn't even cuddle after

I feel better if I call this tuition. PST150-8 ran great for the first 20 miles and then went dead on me. I did all the usual checks. She has new fuel/vacuum lines, new filter, new fuel pump, new carb, airbox checked and cleaned. On the ignition side, she has new CDI, coil, plug. Gave up and called the shop. $450 later, they brought her back. Said my gas looked orange because they often line the tank with beeswax prior to shipping. 1 hour to actually drain the tank and clean the new carb and 4 hours of T/S labor at $85.00 per hour. So maybe flushing the gas tank as part of the PDI is worth the effort.

I seem to have a lot of questions, but this is new to me and I have found that this seems to be the best place for accurate, honest answers.
So, here is the latest question. I pulled the stock air cleaner on my 150cc Viking and found part of the back plate was broken and the remaining 2 tabs are cracked. I think this might be a common problem. I want to replace it with a K&N type filter, but I want to keep the air flow close to stock. I find that style in several sizes but I don't know what the stock carb intake throat is. My stock air box inserts into a sleeve which fits over the outside of the intake manifold. Does anyone know what size I need to order and can anyone suggest a unit that is close to stock?

[replyingto=steve]steve[/replyingto]Thanks to both of you for your much needed help. I do not know if all Ice Bear trikes use the same frame geometry, but the design of the frame on mine seems to have way to much flex. I would be a little uncomfortable going much over 50 on that machine. I am thinking about to installing 1 inch tubing supports for that front end.

I'm happy with 50 mph top end on my Viking, but it takes a week to get there. I've found a complete kit by NCY that upgrades the clutch and variator for about 200 bucks. Is this kit OK for a trike and is it an upgrade that is worth the cost/install effort? I have already installed the CDI, coil, plug combo. I'm thinking that if I open her up for slider, I might as well do the whole package.

I replaced CDI, coil, spark plug, fuel and vacuum lines, fuel filter, fuel pump. Plug tip was black and with only 19 miles, I think it is the carb for sure. Acts like she's flooding out so it might be the float sticking or one of the jets. I'll have to look up which jet but how close would I be if I guessed idle jet? I have a new carb on order. They're pretty cheap and I'll have this one to learn on.
Last update! Found the problem, I think. I pulled the engine cover plate to do some upgrades and then it rained for 4 days. The air intake points up so I think that the air box filled with water. I will install a 90 elbow so that doesn't happen again. I may use vacuum cleaner hose so that I can add a little ram-air effect.

Checked fuel/spark first thing, but will concentrate on carb for now. I don't think it will take much to pull, but I've never gotten one work after working on it. Back in the day there were "carb artists" who specialized in tune/ set up on carbs" Sure wish I had a portable scope for electrical issues. but can't justify the cost.
Vendor starts with "S." 3 scoots. First, no problems great service. Second, wrong scooter, missing water pump bolt and chassis covered with road oil. This one ordered 6-20 and still waiting MSO. After this many purchases, I've learned the secret to happiness is low expectations. I have come to think of these as a hobby/project more than transportation.
Well, let's add one more WTF to this scooter. Just tore up the kick start system trying to save the battery. Think I'll just pull that and plug the hole in the CVT cover. Guess I need to lower my expectations a little more, cause it has 19 miles and isn't even titled yet.

Thanks for your response. Texas, near DFW area. Vendor is jacking me on the MSO, so I've been riding in the parking lot looking for things that fall off and getting a little "chain time" so that I can tweak that adjustment.
I changed the fuel filter before I started it the first time but there may be some crap left in the carb from manufacturing.
I am the building tech for a extended-stay property and am required to live there. We allow no auto repair work on the property, so I am limited to doing minor work on the scoot. I still may pull the carb this week-end. I am trying to check the simple stuff first.

150cc Ice Bear Viking. Did the usual PDI - oil, tranny, wires. I also replace the coil, CDI, plug, and fuel filter as part of my PDI on all of my scoots. She ran great until yesterday when she just quit. This is with only 19 miles on her. Replaced all of these again but still have the same issue.
She will start and run rough for about 10 to 30 seconds and then stop. No rev slow down - just stop. I can not apply throttle either. Pulled the fuel line from the carb while cranking and she is pumping fine to the carb.
I don't, know where to look next! From my years in electronics, I know that everything has weak design areas that are prone to failure so that's where I look first, but I think I've covered most of those mentioned on the scooter forums.

We are having our first rain here in N TX since I got my PST150 Viking. Turns out the angle of the exhaust is letting the rain to the pipe! I am unable to cover or garage it and really don't want to put a cup or "tractor flapper" on it so I am going to install a 1" copper T on a 1" extension on the end. I have minor concerns over pressure, (that's why the T instead of an elbow. Question is: will the exhaust get hot enough to melt the solder joint and does this sound like a workable plan?

I do not like the low handlebars on the PST150 -8 so I have ordered ape hangers with a 12 inch rise, 5 inch center, 7 inch pull back and 32 inch total spread. Rough math says the total length of these bars is about 20 inches from center. Old bars measure 15 inches from the center. Electrical will be easy, but I don't have a clue on where to get brake lines or what size the banjo might be. I would think that I need to measure the length of the current lines, and have some made that are 5 inches longer. Does anyone out there know how to go about getting these made and what banjo to specify?
Sorry for all the posts. I have 25 years on motorcycles so the scooter transition was easy, but this trike thing is gonna take a little time. Totally new muscle memory to program! Still scared of the damn thing and not looking forward to my first pothole at speed. It's my first trike so I don't know if it handles well for a trike or if something is wrong. Front wiggles a little and if the road has a high crown or is sloped to one side, it wants to turn into the slope and follow it down. I just do the counter-steer thing and keep the wheel straight.
