Alleyoop, what did you think about the pic of the variator (is that normal? or do I need to remove and check it out?) and if I need a belt what size should I get?

Richard, your variator looks normal, so does your torque converter at the clutch looks ok to. Is the bell on your clutch blued a little. Looks that way in the one picture. If so your clutch is running way to hot (slipping). My 257 uses the 856-23-30 belt. If you were to go with a longer belt it will ride out the the end of variator before it gets the torque converter at you clutch in high gear causing you to never reach high gear which of course would reduce your top speed. HIgh gear is reached when the belt is clear out on variator and clear in on the torque converter. MY belt is taught wheni squeeze in middle and fits fairly tight in neutral on the variator. If yours is very loose it would act like to big a belt and keep you from reaching top speed. My belt will just barely slip ok when it idles but boy does it take hold fast when u touch the throttle and works very smooth up to high gear. Hope this helps you. Barnie

Richard, I would put a new 856-23-30 back on it. I think you will really notice a difference in how it performs. Right not you are running about the same as a 871 which is just to long. An 871 will work but it just changes all your gear ratios and would not let you reach high gear or top speed or an increase in you starting take off. A longer belt lets your variator ride out sooner b4 it starts to change your torque converter back at the clutch. Is your clutch bell blued? And while u have it open are the clutch pads worn down bad. You may want to put new pads on and lube springs and pins holding the pads on. You would be good to go then for another 12000 miles. Be sure and get a Gates or Bando belt. The Gates are easiest to find. Barnie

Thanks Barnie, Clutch pads are good ;D and yes my bell blue in spots would the belt be causing the slipping I think when I order belt I want to order the little spring for the clutch pads not sure where to get them. What grease do you use, that last time I grease the variator and clutch i used #2 lithium grease. (what would you recommend?

Richard, blue bell would indicate your clutch has gotten very hot, whether only 1 time or often would be hard to tell. It will tell you that it has been slipping probably quite a bit from glazing or weak springs not holding the pads tight against the bell promoting a lot of heat. The belt should not cause the clutch to slip. As long as the belt is turning the torque converter your clutch should engage unless your belt was slipping severly at which point you would really know it as scoot would hardly want to move. That does not appear to be your case since your still riding it. With 15000 mile on it the pads may be just super glazed and hard. You might check the price of new pads & springs vs the cost of an entire new clutch assy and of course a belt. I use hi temp implement grease in my clutch and on only the 4 guides in my variator not other grease in my variator. It seems to withstand the heat without breaking down. The lithium you use is also good as long as its hi heat rated. Maybe we can get JR and Alley and anyone else to add their comments. Normally several suggestions come up with an excellent outcome. PS. make sure your contra springs is good and not broken, that could cause your clutch to slip by intermittedly engaging. Barnie

Hi Barnie, Not too long ago I took bell off and sand papered my clutch pads because of glazing, at that time I did Inspected the pads and there was a lot of pad left, also not too long ago replace my torque spring in my clutch.

Richard, that being said, I think I would just try to do a pm serv on the clutch take it apart and clean up the pins the shoes fit on and just a coating of grease and make sure they move freely and put a new belt on and see how she does. Your springs may be quite fine but just dirt etc on the shoes and pins causing them to work hard. Put on a new belt and do a little maint and give her a try. It only takes a few minutes to change the belt, maint on clutch a little longer. Something to do this week end !!!! Barnie

When the 250B first came out it came with the 871 belt standard and in 08 all I've seen since are the 856. Belt wear along with heat and miles will make the CVT act squirrely.
From what I've always read and relied on is the width measurement. A belt is considered virtually worn out with as little as 10% width loss. That's not much, on a 23mm wide belt it's on 2.3mm. But the bottom line is how is your scooter running? Some say you can gain top end with a longer stretched belt?
If you can and all is well then go for it. The belt on my scooter presently has around 8500 miles on it, doing fine but I've seen some who change ever 6 to 7k?
BTW mine came stock with the 856 on it but I've considered a 871 at times.

Thanks Barnie, Yes I want to do a good pm to my clutch area, I'm sure it needs clean badly and greased in all those areas you mentioned, and of course a new belt is in order. I don't mind doing what you say, I've had the clutch out several times, I appreciate your advice ;D

Hi JR, My belt has over 13,000 mile on it. I'm just wondering when the clutch is slipping, is that what would cause the jerking? alleyoop thinks in the fuel delivery, I'm 2 1/2 turns out, tomorrow I'm going to turn 1/4 turn leaner and see what that does, it only does it 60 and above

JR, I have found experimenting that a longer belt than stock size or a stretched belt lets the variator ride out at the top like its should but the extra length causes the belt to not drop as deep in the torque converter causing a loss of top speed because you reach high gear on the variator but not on the torque converter. What are you findings. Richard, guess your still looking for the witch but I am sure u will find it. Barnie
