Thank you ellpee. I just relocated to OH weeks ago so AZ is out of the range for now. The 1985 Yamaha Deluxe I checked out was a real sweetheart. The gentleman selling had a serious medical condition so he was not about to install a new battery or fuss with it in any way. Supposedly it ran fine when it was last ridden some 2 years ago but who knows what gummed up in the sitting time. Sweet looking scoot, a top of the line two tone cream & brown with 2tone pinstripes, color matching wheels, a 2 step 2 seater with naugahyde side and velour top. A incoming check I've been expecting was delayed because of my change of address so Caller #2 got the prize instead of me. aye caramba! And i'm one of these bargain shoppers, once I get TP at 27 cents a roll it agonizes me to pay 28, so I have to find a scoot just as nice at comparable or better price. It's gonna be a long winter.

Kept my eye peeled for a early Honda Elite 250, found a faded purple repaint daily runner but the 80+K odometer got me leery. I want to ride it not rebuild every inch of it. Going tomorrow to see a '85 Yamaha Deluxe 185 ( a/k/a Riva 180, XC180, Cygnus 180) a 171CC that has a lot of the George Jetson appeal going for it like the Elite. Good points: under 2500 miles, gorgeous condition. Elderly owner claims it ran wonderfully when he put it in storage 4-5 years ago, everything is original and of course it won't start. It was easy to tell this is his pride and joy and he would have been riding it and working on it if he were still able. I'm a little excited and a little nervous. "everything is original" alone is going to cost big to replace dry rotted tires, belt, hoses, battery and whatever has suffered from sitting and slowly hardening dry. The carb area is an over-engineered nightmare that Yamaha ceased using. And many parts are only available with luck as used. On the up side, from what i've read, this is a top of the line Model that is a thrill on the road. And it looks cool.
This pit in my stomach makes me feel alive. I'll keep you posted.

Sorry I haven't driven either but they both look like comfy rides. Would be sweet if you could find each Model in good used condition For Sale and work out a week end test ride. Seller would probably want full sale price cash in hand and paper signed saying you scratch it, it's sold. I noticed MC sellers are real stern about no joyrides, as they put it.
If these Models are both by reputable manufacturers and have similar size, weight, balance and braking systems the difference should be minute, no? You could see how much replacement shock absorbers cost, find out if there is a glaring difference.
Dealerships would do well to have rentals, just like some people like to rent a car to see if it's the one they will buy. Good luck to you.

Congrats and best of luck on your new ride. I've noticed that Jonway is a popular model that gets mention on forums. That's great you having the chutzpah to try, try again after going down and having a knee situation, I salute your courage. Have you considered checking the division of motor vehicle web site for your state to see if they offer a driver training safety course? I think i'm going to go that route myself. I haven't ridden on two wheels in a very long time and I want to get my 'sea legs' before I buy a scooter. Best of luck to you and your husband with your little girl. Enjoy!

trailheadmike thanks so much for the video and details, great stuff. I see you're in Orange NJ - back in the 70's I used to haunt Mecca Magic in E.Orange for hobby supplies.

Thank you tvnacman. Where I'm located is quick easy access to city or rural driving so your input is valuable to me.

Hi all. I'm wondering what you experienced scooterists consider the safest and/or your most favorite Headlight style. Do you prefer fixed position on front end or the type which turns with the handlebars? Old school style or the newer LED tiny bulbs? Thanks in advance for your response. Please feel free to share any Headlight info, I'm a noob trying to learn all I can.

Thank you JR. Long ago in my youth I drove my 1974 Moto Morini 3 1/2 Cafe Sport and I'm really looking forward to two wheeling once again.

brucewayne I hope things have improved between you and your sibling. if not and with all due respect I'm hoping you'll take a different road than deviant shenanigans designed to drive her from the house. sometimes mental health is more fragile than we realize, and there is also the old "do unto others as you would have others do unto you" to consider. I hate to sound like an Oprah Soccer Mom type but I'd bet dollars to donuts you can find some really good advice on Dr. Phil's website. He is not to everyone's taste but he does seem to provide mature insight based on a solid education, life experience and the hard work of a huge staff. people do not arrive where they are overnight, it's a lifetime filled with all sorts of things that makes us who and where we are today. maybe if you search around on Dr. Phil's site you'll find a way to help your sister onto a better and more productive path. I wish you both the best of luck.

JR the monthly National Lampoon Magazines from the 1970's had one page devoted to bizarre News stories that were often hilarious. That mag was very non-PC and often offensive depending on one's point of view and tastes - but this was a different time and some felt anything goes for the sake of a laugh. One article I recall was a man in a small grocery who put a stack of cat food cans on the register counter and then exposed and placed his 'member' on the counter. The clerk remained calm and swiftly smashed the stack of cat food cans down so swiftly on the customers pride and joy that the fellow passed out and the clerk phoned the police.

Hi all. I'm an old married man, retired young, with a lovely wife who brings home the bacon as an executive. No children so we dote on our handsome male Chow Pei canine. We just left New Jersey USA to a nicer place and great employment opportunity for the Mrs in the Mid West. I got the bug to get a scooter some months ago. I've been trolling scooter forums, watching YouTube videos, drooling over eBay auction listings and wasting late night hours pouring over online dealer ads to educate myself before parting with my mad money. Being very tall and terribly overweight I've been able to eliminate a buttload of makes and models based on size and engine displacement. I'll admit I'm very attracted to the mid-80's Honda Elite 250 in brown/tan. That model has a certain George Jetson appeal. Great lines, and the hide-away headlight feature is the icing on the cake. I still have to earn a motorcycle license, keep feeding the piggy bank and wait for the right scooter to come available at the right price. Meanwhile I'll continue to learn and dream of rides to come. Thanks for taking the time to read my post. See you in the forums!
