Picked up a complete 1960A going to try and get it running shortly. All so go two rolling chassis with many parts including motor bottom ends. Hope to start taking cranks apart on the others and getting ready to build them. Looking like we will have a 60A, 61AU, 62AH and 63AH. Jeff

I took inventory on toppers and parts last Sunday and this Sunday I will be taking motors apart to see what we need to get. Motors will be the first thing. I will be rebuilding the cranks myself which will include rebuilding the rods. I have done other small 2 cycle cranks and many Harley cranks. Jeff

My first two wheeler was a 1960 Topper, the under 5 HP model. I did ride an AH with a side car that the dealer had. The side car would come off of the ground when you turned right or left. Rather disconcerting. Never had my sidecar on my big bike come up making a left turn and if it does on my big rig you can kiss your butt goodby. Now I can make it come up on right turns or going straight and fly it throw all 6 gears. LOL Thanks Jeff

Thanks all for the input. Working on them is not a problem since I have been riding and working including but not limited to machine work for 44 plus years. I even have a small machine shop in my basement. Thanks Jeff

Yesterday my friend and I started looking at all the parts he has pictures coming. We will be building one 60 or 61, 62 and not sure what the 3rd will be but it will be a 62 to 65. For those that do not know what a Harley Topper is they built them starting in 1959 but where sold as a 1960 and the last one was made in 1965. They are 165cc, 10 CI two strokes bore 2.376-inch stroke 2.281 and they made 3 models A that was the standard model with 6.1 compression around 6HP. Then the AU that had a smaller carburetor and intake. The U stood for underpowered as way back when in many states a child under the driving age could get junior licenses but it had to me no more then 5HP. Both of these had a top speed of 40 to 45 MPH. Then the AH which I am going to build fort my self that had a bigger port cylinder a compression ratio of 8.1 HP bigger around 8HP and a top speed around 60MPH. They all looked the same just what motor was in it you had to look on the motor to see what model they are. I will post pictures as when they come available. Here are two pictures but these are not ours but to give you an idea how they look and Harley did make a factory sidecar for them and one day hope to have one as I am a rig driver (motorcycle or scooter with a sidecar) as my only transportation. Hope all will enjoy these builds. Any one knows where there are any Harley Topper parts please let me know. Thanks Jeff

Is your scooter a diesel motor no then I would not use diesel oil. I would use air cooled 4 stroke motor oil. There is reasons why they make special oils.

I have read where the Taiwan scooters are much better then the Chinese ones. Are there any other Taiwan scooter manufacturers? I will do a search tonight. Thanks all for the input and please keep it coming. Jeff

I know the top makers are good I was wondering about the Chinese scooters? I cannot afford a $4,000 up scooter I am looking for around $1000 to $1500. Thanks Jeff

Very cool I love road trips. My longest from Macon, GA to Alaska and back but that was on my motorcycle not a scooter. A little over 10,000 miles in about 6 weeks.

Sea Foam has been around for like 50 or 60 years. I run it all year long do to the damn ethanol not in every tank but about every 3 tanks. Ethanol absorbs moister big time. In my opinion letting any combustible engine sit is the worst thing you can do as it will get moister in side the motor and the only way to get it out short of taking it apart is run it get it to running temperature and burn it off. I have taking motors apart and I could tell they sat do to looking at the cylinder and you could tell where the rings where for a while sitting. The customers I have that ride a lot have fewer problems then the ones that ride maybe a couple times a month. The only time I do not ride is when there is snow on the roads and where I live that only happens about every 10 years. I ride rain or shine hot or cold all year.

When a motor sits it will get moister in it and the only way to get it out is run the motor long enough to burn the moister off. I have built many an engine I could tell that it sat for a while as you could tell looking at the cylinder. The worst thing you can do to any motor is let it sit. Customers bikes I work on those that ride daily have less trouble then those the ride them a couple times a month. I ride mine year round but if you live where it snows a lot I can understanding not riding only when there is snow on the roads.

Does it idle OK? If not check for a air leak on the intake gaskets.
