Finally got the Magnum back from Mr Fixit after two months, allegedly with a new stator. It's destined for Craigslist as soon as possible, but on the ride home I found yet another problem. It starts and runs fine at lower rpm and speed, up to about 40 mph or so. Also runs fine at near-WOT rpm when in neutral. But under load, once it gets above 40 mph or so, the engine starts to miss. Once it drops down to lower speed, all good again. (Note that at the moment it has no muffler installed, exhaust is coming straight off the header pipe. Don't know if that is relevant.)
So clearly I need to solve that if I want to sell if for a reasonable price. What should I be looking at as the culprit?

Magnum finally out of the shop, starts and runs okay in neutral and up to about 40 mhp, then starts missing. Muffler not connected yet, hope that resolves the missing; also need to reinstall some front plastics correctly, Mr Fixit did not do so. New speedometer sensor appears to give more accurate readings, small silver lining. Will do the minor stuff, then it goes on Craigslist.

$7500, 2019 Ryker 900 with <3000 miles, all black -- looks like the Batmobile. 3 cylinders, LOTS of pep compared to anything I've ridden before; internet says it'll go 90 mph, more than I'll ever need. Seller says he has had it on the interstate with no problem. Premium gas and only about 35 mpg, c'est la vie. Foot brake, so no handlebar levers, and the throttle is electronic, no cable. (haven't asked or read anything, but I presume EFI.) No windshield, minimal cargo space, will probably shop the internet aftermarket to address those things but will ride it awhile first. One plus, it looks like everything under the plastic is much more accessible for DIY, although I doubt I'll be doing anything myself beyond the most basic maintenance -- thankfully there's a dealer only a few miles from me, so I won't have to deal with the "we don't work on those" thing any more.
Ironically, now that the 2020's are out the Tucson dealer is selling off a couple new 2019's for $7200, but that's the 600 model and doesn't include taxes, etc., so I'm okay with my decision. Haven't taken possession yet, will post a pic or two then if I can remember how.

Took the plunge and bought a very nice, only slightly used (May 2019) Ryker 900 at a great price, replacing the constant aggravation with my 2012 Ice Bear Magnum. Anybody toying with the idea of buying a Magnum, STOP until you have read all of my posts in this forum classroom. If after that you still want to do it, contact me and I'll also sell you a cat 'o nine tails that you can flog yourself with, because you're apparently into pain.
That being said, the Magnum has been a fun ride when it was working. At the moment it only needs a new stator to get it back in good running condition again, so if anybody with more patience and mechanical skill than me wants to buy it and trailer it home as a fixer-upper, message me and we can discuss it. Just be aware that unless you happen to live next door to RapidJim up in Wisconsin, you're likely to be on your own for any future repairs.

Mr Fixit still dragging his feet on the Magnum, so I'm walking away from it mentally; if he ever gets around to fixing the stator problem, fine, if not, don't care. Going to look at the used Ryker in the next week or so, hope it checks out A-OK, if so I'll be riding again soon.

Hey, maybe we could start a whole new Ryker forum! Happy new year.

Magnum still sitting at the fixit shop, where it is clearly not his top priority, to put it mildly. Part has arrived, not sure if it's the right one until he takes the old one out. Meanwhile, there's an almost new Ryker (<3000 miles) on local Craigslist, excellent price, VE-E-ERY tempted.

Just to keep this tale of woe up to date: Magnum died completely on a ride a few weeks ago, would crank but wouldn't start, had to trailer it back to Mr. Fixit, and this time it needs a stator to the tune of about $200 plus labor. The gift that keeps on giving. I'll have to sell it for $2000 just to cover all the repair costs, and that's not likely.

Ryker?

As soon as I can dispose of my Ice Bear Magnum, which has been a monumental PITA almost from Day One seven years ago, I'm seriously contemplating buying a Canam Ryker. Anyone have any stories to share, positive or negative?

You'n'me. It'd be nice if one of the Japanese companies were offering good-quality trikes, but failing that, the Ryker seems like one's only option. Doofy-looking thing, though....

Got gaskets on line per RapidJim, yes, part metal/part fiberglass or whatever, fit fine, more or less solved the wiggle problem.
However, out on a run yesterday, scooter quit, trailered it to Mr. Fixit, if he gets it to where it starts consistently and appears to run smoothly, next stop will be Craigslist. I've finally had it. Actually considering one of the smaller CanAms!

Finally got all the necessary bits and pieces to remodel my exhaust system from dual down to a single aftermarket muffler on one side, and it survived a 20-mile test run okay I think. Need to recheck and tighten everything this morning just to be safe. A little louder, but nothing like Harley grade, so shouldn't earn me any tickets. Will see if different back pressure will require any mixture tweaking over time. Also have to re-fasten one of the front plastics, always hate it when I have to remove any of those, never want to go back on quite right without a struggle. There's always duct tape! But knock wood, ready to get back on the road aside from some day needing to replace that speedometer sensor. Just in time for cooler fall weather, thank goodness.
Oh, about the exhaust thing: in removing the old exhaust pipe, found it wiggled quite a bit, not really tight-tight at the engine end, and I found no sign whatever of an exhaust gasket. There's just the pipe, a steel flange, and two bolts. In replacing it, tightened the bolt as well as I could, flange is snug up against the engine, but there's still a little wiggle in the pipe, which doesn't seem right. I emailed RapidJim to ask about it but got no reply. Any Magnum-Zodiac owners out there know whether there ought to be a gasket instead of just an iron-to-iron connection?

what kind of handlebar switches does it have? Sounds to me like a switch problem, but not familiar with your scoot.

I have a 2012 Magnum, so might not be the same, but any chance your headlights/taillights are on a handlebar switch and it's gone bad? Mine has a full-off/full-on position for heads and tails.

Yup, frustrating when I read that another poster has several Zodiacs and has good luck with them. Why me, Lord? Never mind, a man gotta have projects!
