What is the Maximum safe temperature for motor oil: If you have concerns just drop an oil temp gauge to monitor the actual temps that it reaches. All I can tell you is that the maximum safe temperature for motor oil is 300F, but even at 250F mineral oil will start to degrade and require more frequent changes. Recommend Synthetic Oil for scooters: These 150cc scooters engine take a heavy beating. Especially if your heavy rider weighting 250 pounds or more. And when you upgrade it to a big bore engine, the oil will degrade even more. These babies get super hot because of poor ventilation system. If the oil temp does turn out to be too high, the cheapest fix is to start using synthetic oil or make an investment and add an oil cooler. I always recommend synthetic oil to all the scooter riders who ask me. This alone will bring the temp down significantly while being able to safely withstand higher temps. An even better solution, of course, is to fit an oil cooler. Scooter Oil Change: Always check your valve gaps......every 500-750 miles. And change your engine regularly every 500 miles. Attachments:

Don't use synthetic oil until the engine is broken in. Some low end scooters have case leaks (wicking) with synthetic oils, and they can often be stopped by switching to dino oil...
Jury is out on what synthetic oil does to the engine crank seals...

And change your engine regularly every 500 miles. I'm assuming that means engine oil Otherwise that could get expensive I switch mine about every 6-800, with the gear oil usually at the same time. Dino vs Syn is one hell of a fun discussion. I think the consensus is that some folks have troubles around the time they switch to syn, yet to hear much bad about dino beyond it not being as versatile / resilient with heat as you mention. Different grades of oil work at different temperature ranges. If you live in hot climate you might want a heavier oil like say 20w50 whereas in a cold climate you might want a lighter oil like a 5w30, if you live somewhere that changes over the year, switch your oil for winter / summer. You are likely to want to switch it anyway due to mileage and the cost is minimal (usually about 5 bucks). If you live on a moderate climate but run the scoot hard then wider range oil like a 10w50 maybe? I'd welcome any corrections if I'm wrong here

I have been a Castrol 4T guy for 30 years..
I switch to Mobil 1 0W40 full synthetic last year and it is much smoother in the GY6. I won't go back to 4T again...

i use glyptal in all my racing engines it fill's all those nuks and cranys left behind from casting. makes oil run smooth and cleaner and not so hot. i really think over 220 degrees your pushing it. but i'v seen them 265+ but thats when a engine builder's heart get's a hammer'ing. now 300 never heard of that excuse my ignorance. just saying..thanks love this board. buford......

I'll agree Evil! There was one oil listed that is a old time favorite of mine that's hard to find anymore and thats the Havoline oil. I didn't know it had that good of temp ratings but I'll tell you one thing you'll never have a dirty gummed up engine using it.

I think Mc Donnalds does the fries at about 240 degrees in 10w30, some go hotter but the oil doesn't last nearly as long hotter.

Thanks, JB. I did think to give the Norton-neutral disclaimer, but didn't consider the ramifications of oil selection, a fiercely-debated topic. Good to see fellow Kentuckian, BTW! ;D Looks like Havoline got hoovered up into Chevron back in '01, JR. For now at least, Havoline dino looks to still be widely available, but eeple say the Havoline synth is scarcer than chicken lips at this point. The site claims it still exists, but I'd bet the formula either evolved into something else, or is 'canned' from the market in favor of some competing Chevron product (Delo variants being the primary suspects in either case). Even Google can't find any!

I use Amsoil in my Harley all my cars my lawn equipment and my wife's scooter. Works great no problems. Bel-Ray in the tranny. A little pricey but well worth it. But this is my opinion. ;D
PS for bigger bikes I would use Red Line Shock proof in the tranny..
