Hello greetings from Caracas Venezuela , I’ve some doubts about the correct oil to use in my Chinese Scooter 250 ( Engine type Yamaha YP250 1P69MM- made by Jinlang, liquid cooled), so the scooter manual says that the oil have to be 4T SAE 20W50 API – SH, okey I’ve had doing oil changes with Mineral oil ( dyno ) 20w50, from break in at 162 km( 100 mi ), 428km( 265 mi ), 533km ( 331 mi ), 1066Km ( 662 mi ), 1766km ( 1097 mi ), 2828km ( 1757 mi ), 4050km ( 2516 mi ), 4998km ( 3105 mi ), so I try to change every 1000km aprox., in this moment counter 5495km ( 3414 mi ), so I think 20W50 oil is a little thick for my new bike and vibration level is a lot, although I’ve made some adjustments tightening screws and nuts, now I’m considering to change to blend synthetic oil 10w-40 4T ( Valvoline, Castrol, Shell, etc.. ), the temperature in my city ( Caracas ) is always warm ( 25 - 33 Celsius ), Is a safe move to change viscosity and oil type in these Chinese scooter ? What do you think about this ? Thank you for opinions

I've used 20/50W dino oil for the entire life of my 250B with no issues, in fact in hot climates I would use nothing else and oil density will not make any engine shake or vibrate.
I use Castrol 20W/50W and have over 12,000 miles on the scooter.

I use Castrol 20W/50W and have over 12,000 miles on the scooter. JR . 19000 km is quite a lot for this scooters, I hope mine last enough like yours Thank you JR

I should thing that ANY brand-name oil of the appropriate weight -- Mobil, Castrol, etc. -- will be AT LEAST as good as what Chinese drivers of these same scooters are using. That does NOT necessarily apply to the cheap discount stuff you might find at dollar stores or discount outlets, with labels you don't recognize.

I have used Castrol 10W40 Synthetic motor oil for over 11,000 miles and no issues. Enjoy your ride.....

PS, I would not waste the extra money on synthetics, particularly given the frequency of scooter oil changes.

The synthetic oil last longer before breaking down. We had screens on engines long before we had filters.

The synthetic oil last longer, that's true, however this scooters doesn't have oil filter, the good ones, just a metal mesh to catch waste of oil, this my concern about oils, I begin with 20w50 oil made in my country ( Oilven Premiun 4t ), and I think I'll continue doing this as now

Many words and opinions have been written about the type of oil to use in scooters and motorcycles and autos as well. As a layman in the mechanics arena,I have written a few opinions usually based on experience rather than on clinical experiment.My opinion comes from a master mechanic in the piston ring manufacturing and engine building business. He made rings to order for some racing people locally in the St.Louis area. He rebuilt some engines with tight tolerances in the crankshaft ,insert and piston ring and cylinder walls. All this demanded a superior oil impervious to heat and friction for lubrication ,so my friend ,Ben,began checking cylinder walls for wear with high end mics and comparing the results of different brands of oil for wear and viscosity and durability--he routinely installed his rings in an engine and kept a chart of the mileage and type of usage,i.e.,racing,normal street usage,and then at intervals,like 10,000 miles,would tear the engine down,if it was a car under his care and mic the cylinder walls and record the brand of oil used during that time---now ,bear with me,it is not all that complicated---he used Valvoline,Penzoil,Quaker State,Havoline,and Phillips 66--now what he found will probably really confuse you--none of the brands were superior to others,and at the time we weren't using synthetic ,so he found that the only factor common to all---change oil regularly--dirt--dirt caused more wear and tear than heat or long usage and as long as the oil was filtered adequately ,it didn't matter what oil it was,keep it clean--it is the life of your engine--clean oil--change it regularly--conventional,synthetic,change it regularly--that is the lesson he taught me --change your oil . On a side note,his favorite oil at the time was Phillips 66,he said it was just slicker than the others---he would stick a screwdriver in some Phillips and have you try to pick it up by the tip of the blade and for sure,it was difficult to hold....all this was back in the 70s and 80s ,so of course things change,but dirt is always with us--remember--dirt--lol-- btw...some oil companies tout their oils as being able to suspend dirt for a longer time and therefore will need changing less often--well,that dirt will replace volume in the oil over all,so ,don't chance it--that's my opinion--happy trails,fflintstone

Absolutely fflintstone !! I also think that " change oil regularly " is the key for the life to any engine, specially this scooters, Thank you for all your opinions, they're a meaningful insight for me

Well, to be honest I've been thinking of selling the Magnum, because I'm not really getting a lot of use out of it up here in the New Mexico mountains. Summer rains, this, that and the other, I've only put a couple hundred miles on it this summer. But I don't know how from Tennessee you could even arrange to look at it, let alone transport it if you decided to buy it. I paid about $4K for it, have cracked the plastic a couple times and had to do fiberglas repairs and repaint, but it still looks pretty good. If you want to pursue it, PM me.
