While on the same topic; how often should you change oil and what is a correct break-in period? There seem to be as many opinions as there are types of oil? Thanks.

Depends your Bike, My break-in was "ride it like you'll ride it" , but in the highway I running hard, I used the advices from this link .scooterfocus.com/scooter_break-in.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">.scooterfocus.com/scooter_break-in.html, and works for me. If a new Chinese scoot, more than necessary change the oil before you ride, this scooters come brand new with a green oil that is only to preserve the engine parts, follow your manual specs, by example use a good ( Valvoline, Castrol ) Dyno 10w30 oil and gear oil , change the oil every 250 km, until 1000 Km, after that as you prefer change 1000 to 1500km, with your oil preferred. I still use Dyno oil (20w50) with 5730 Km with no problems.

The only thing I would add to that is during the first 20 to 50 miles, try not to ride at a constant throttle, vary your speed and stay away from full open throttle for that period. BTW, here in Wi I use conventional Valvoline 10W40, in hotter climates and larger displacement scooters I would recommend 20W50 conventional oil. Oil changes every 800 miles or once a year. Due to contaminates, oil change frequency and screen type filters, I do not see the "benefits" or cost effectiveness of synthetic oil. The most beneficial maintenance you can do to your scooter is clean oil.

Btw--while you are changing that Chinese oil out of your scooter ,be sure to flush that antifreeze out as well...we call it cool aide ,and install a good brand antifreeze--and I would change the brake fluid and differential oil--we use 80-90 in the rear end--the valve stems are also suspect, usually of plastic and will crack --replace with a good brand of valve stem-when I first read of this ,my scooter had only a 1000 miles on it ,and the stems were already cracked in the rim--not much trouble to replace them and worth it---it is well documented in earlier threads--happy trails, fflintstone
