Just stumbled across a 52 Cushman this Friday while on a fishing trip to my old home place where I was raised. I'm pretty sure it's this model but a little hard to tell at this moment. The guy who has it found it in Oklahoma a few years back and took her all apart to restore it but due to funds and bad health is not going to be able to do it. He's had lots of offers but is an old friend of mine and owes me a favor or two so he's promised me first tabs on it as soon as he gets ready to let it go. Reason I want it is of course it's a fully complete original Cushman but it's because it's the first scooter I actually ever rode in 1953. I owned lot of motorcycles over the years from Yamaha to Honda, Suzuki to Kawasaki but I've never owned a original Cushman and this year is special because my uncle owned a 52 model and when he was around I rode the heck out of that thing! Not bad for an old guy who someone mentioned has only rode a scooter since 08. ;D JR

Back in that time period I used to go to the Western Auto Store in Asheville, NC and drool all over the ones that they had for sale. I was 16, still in school and could not afford one. Go for it, JR. You may never get a chance at another. They are scarce as hens teeth and the ones that are for sale are very pricey.

I'm not worried about the price, it's not unreasonable. For him and I can't blame him at all it's giving up something he really wanted to do. He has 3 children and he was hoping that one of them would take up the project but they don't seem interested. He's going to make one more request and if they say no then he's supposed to call me.
Yea Wolf I wanted one so bad when I was a kid I couldn't stand it.

we all wanted when we were kids . I remember I was 17 my parents added me to there credit card account so I could buy tools for work . I went to the Honda dealer and bought a 70cc passport . Man they were pissed , I think dad had more fun riding it then I did . I hope it goes your way JR , we never forget the kid inside ! Seems the kid inside still wants it , you may have owned many bikes but that was the first one you wanted sometimes that feeling never goes away .

JR, That is a nice looking scoot, can't wait until you have it fully restore. They are had to find, In the near future I too want to buy another scoot to work on, so I'll be looking for something that need work to get it going. (I love working on scoot) hope to have a little shop someday ;D

Guess what, found some!. go to Craigslist-Atlanta, look under motorcycles, search Cushman and you will find:1. 1959 Cushman Eagle, black, $4800.00 2. 1959 Cushman Highlander, $1700.00(not an Eagle but interesting). 3 1965 Cushman Eagle $6000.00

Weren't the Cushmans in the hundreds when new, not in the thousands? I never bought one but did have a Whizzer for a bit over a $100 plus install. I bought used for about $40.
I always wanted a Cushman and some of my high school friends had them 1950 time frame, then one of my friends showed up with a California popular model of scooter the Salsbury. I thought to be a much more sleek design than Cushman. Must not have been very durable as we now see mostly Cushman survivors. .

Bobf, I think you are right on price of Cushmans in that era. I had a Whizzer and a Velo Solex in my early teens. Wish I still had the Velo.

Yes Bob Cushmans could be bought in the $100 to $200 range depending on what model but considering that people like my parents at the time were working for such low wages $100 was a lot of money. My very first bicycle was bought by my mom at Otasco, the Otasco Flying O on lay-o-way and it took her 6 months to pay for it. My parents got up at 4 in the morning to go to work at a poultry processing plant for a combined hourly wage of $1.50 per hour and lots of times my dad worked two shifts to help make ends meet.

JR, that sounds a lot like when I was growing up too. My very first job, not counting paper route, paid 0.25 per hour. My first job beyond graduation was about $1.50 on a construction job. My first inside year round job paid $1.00 plus some benefits. My mother never was allowed to work per my dad as she had a primary job of taking care of the 5 kids. Times were a bit closer those days but I think in the big picture a lot better than now with everyone living on credit. Even our government thinks they can live on credit. One day we may all have to pay for all this credit mess too many are now living with. The wife and I do use credit cards for the convenience of use. But each month as the credit card comes in we pay total from our savings or checking. We do not carry any debt beyond that. .
