so I marked my variator this morning , and went for a ride .
all of a sudden loss of power ticking , on the hwy no where to go, I stay on the gas to keep it rolling . Pull into rest area stall , it won't restart . Hardly any tools I pull the valve cover . Little play on the rockers, oil everywhere smoking . I wait a little while no start (some sputter at wot ) . I button things up it starts and takes off . The first few stops it stalls . Now holding throddle at stops weak at best . I made it home . so it is ticking lack of power , any ideas?
the scooter is like a shot glass the bottom half is filled with s**t and the top half with honey (the honey tastes so good ) now I'm at the second half .

Why did you mark the variator?

John where di the ticking sound come from? Did it sound like it was from the engine crankcase of valve area? I don't know of anything in the CVT area that would cause the not wanting to start thing? Were the vavles loose? JR

You mark the Variator to see how high the belt is traveling up the pulley. That will quickly let you know you need to tune your CVT to get the most out of the Variator. Remember a bigger wheel will turn a smaller wheel faster. So the higher you can get the Belt to travel up the Variator the faster it will turn the Clutch Pulley when the Belt is at its smallest radius in the Clutch pulley. Now to get the belt to travel up higher you need a couple of things to match up. One you may need heavier weights or and higher rpms. You may need both or just one it all depends on what rpms it is currently running at . You may also need a stronger Contra Spring with little heavier weights. Another thing to consider is the size of your current Variator, normally the OEM Variators that the scoot comes with if you notice are SMALLER in diameter compared to the Fan Pulley face. And a belt will only go as high as the samllest surface. So you may also need to get what they call a performance Variator which for 150s usually are 107mm in diameter(they call them 114-115mm--But they are not they are 107mm in diameter). But those match the diameter of your Variator Fan Face so now you have another 3/8 of possible belt travel for you to try and get the belt to travel. And if you can you can pick up about 5 more mph on your top end speed. Alleyoop

I would guess the Valves are to loose and that is what is clattering. Also check for a broken springs on the rockers. Don't forget there are two per one inside the other. Alleyoop

I had a loss of power , about a week ago .Ii checked the valves , the exaust was tight . I adjusted it it was tapping a little bit . I think I will readjust the valves again . See what I get . I'm unsure if the louder ticking was comming from the valves or the crank .

This is probably out there but I used to get a ticking noise from the PAIR reed valve on a motorcycle I once had. It was crud buildup keeping it from seating properly. Maybe one is broken if you still have them and doing something weird. Just a thought.

John, Can you get a sound video of it maybe that may help in pinpointing what it may be. Or get a funnel and touch different areas of the motor, valve cover, variator clucth area etcc.. to see where it is the loudest. Alleyoop

I pulled the engine apart , a side of the piston is scored . I also found a hole is the air box . The piston is so bad it split some of the rings . The mark left on the variator is about 1/4" from the edge .

Yea that is a problem there are not to many machinests around these days anymore. When I had mine done I googled all of Illinios trying to fine someone that would bore it out(NADA). That is why I had to haul my Trike 400 miles up to Wisconsin to JIM(RapidRepair). Alleyoop

COOL!! just be sure you install the Rings correctly and the Piston Sleeve Pins if you mess those up you will be tearing it down again. Good Luck Bro and if you have a chance take pictures or Video. Alleyoop
