Hi all, I haven't been on this forum for many months now. You will recall that I was immigrating to the US and it has finally happen now. In fact I have been here since May of this year. Missing my Jonway which I sold back in South Africa. I like it here (not the winter) but I have some serious frustrations. One I struggle to find a job. I am applying in the academic, teaching, training fields and have really applied for almost 100 jobs with one telephone interview. I am looking in the Virginia North are as well as Hampton Roads and Virginia Beach area. I have to wonder if just maybe I am discriminated against because of my immigrant status. My other concern is that I am waiting for my green card to arrive. This card is just not arriving and without it I cannot apply for a drivers license or get medical insurance. Very frustrating as I would like to get my life back on track by buying a vehicle and looking for a scoot again. Anyway nice to be here, missing home and family.

Welcome scootaway, this is the land of opportunity and it does have problems--but,we won't kill you for having religion,or being one color or another ,no matter what some say--we won't hate you if you buy a Harley but we do expect you to respect others choices, but this is America,so you don't even have to respect us--joke --you have arrived during the mildest part of the winter ,and but we have record setting snowfall and cold in just about all states --some of us simply put on more clothing and go for a ride on snow mobiles--( a type of funny looking scooter that runs over snow)we don't have any snow mobiles here in the South,in Tennessee because we usually don't have much snow-looks like we might have some this year, but don't open up a snow mobile dealership here--some tried it a few years ago after a big snowfall but we didn't get any more snow for 2 years--so ,the dealership failed--lol--my message to you is,hang in there, you will find work, the weather will change, and you will soon become a seasoned American--happy trails, fflintstone

Hello to you Scootaway and welcome.
We are having times when jobs are sporadic. Some locations are doing well and others still failing after at least 8 years since the economy tanked. Where I live in southern Arizona it seems jobs are OK, but not enough to bring lots more to us looking for work. Where my son and daughter live in northern Colorado there seems to be plenty of work but also some local inflation too. Prior to working in Colorado my daughter had a government type job. Good wages and all but after a few years she decided to become a contractor type. No real long time security but pretty good wages. Now she is working from her home through an agency. Sometimes she needs to travel, but still doing OK money wise.
So don't give up too soon. Maybe, depending on what you really can do and want to do, you may find something in a contract type job while still looking for a more permanent type job. This is a big country and by area some are doing well and other areas are not doing so well, and a lot depends on what you want to do or can do.

Many thanks to you all for the hearty welcome and words of encouragement, I know the change won't be given on a platter I must just hang in there. I appreciate, thank you.

Welcome to the US. Job - try community colleges. If I remember correctly, each county in VA has one. You'll probably need to wait for your green card tho. Good Luck!
