I have a 250b linhai 257cc...Is rides good, but when idling there is a rattle back by the clutch area under the belt cover..Going to check it out tomorrow, but just looking for some thoughts & ideas of what you guys here think it could be......Replaced the belt this last spring & installed new slider weights (11g) in variator.....this started about 2 weeks ago...

Sounds like the weights are rattling around they usually do at idle. If you probably noticed it had a lot of grease in the variator with a cover on it. Also if you also noticed the weights fit a little loose in the ramps that is why they used grease in there to quiet them down. But with the cvt cover on take a funnel and or a screwdriver and touch the cover by the Variator and you will know if it is rattling from there if not then put it on cover by the clutch and see if the rattling is coming from there. My bet is the Variator. Alleyoop

But it sounds like it's coming from the rear by the clutch area...I have 2 of these 250b's & the other one you don't hear the rattle, not that loud anyways.....Is it possible it could be a broken clutch spring??

I said MAKE A FUNNEL OR US a REGULAR SCREWDRIVER (OLD TRICK OF THE TRADE) and touch the cvt by the VARIATOR with the point of the screwdriver and put your hear to the HANDLE, you will know if the rattle is coming from there IF NOT then put the point of the SCREWDRIVER on the CVT cover by the CLUTCH and do the same thing. The SCREWDRIVER will AMPLIFY the sound and you can pinpoint noises very easy.
Right now your just guessing this way no guessing. Alleyoop

Well,I did the screw drive thing..I have done that before on alternators on cars....I didn't hear anything...So,I pulled everything apart & didn't see anything that would be a problem....I pulled the variator apart to make sure all sliders were set in there right & also pulled the clutch off & did seem to be anything wrong with either of them...I did not pull the clutch apart, don't have the tools....I can't believe the sliders can be that noisy....It's a really noisy at idle...The other 250b that I have & installed the same sliders in,don't make that kind of noise....It also has a small smell of rubber burning when idling,But the belt looks good.... Question,is the belt cover suppose to get hot when the scoot is running, this thing almost gets to hot to touch......Also,is it ok to use bearing grease on the variator center shaft so it slides freely? Thats what I have used.....

The grease maybe what your smelling NO GREASE on the SHAFT just clean it off. On the 250s the weights fit loose I think because either they do not make weights the right size for those variators and maybe that is why they fill it up with grease in the ramps and also to cut down on the rattling. Yes the COVER does get really hot just make sure the air inlet is not clogged to help get some air in there. Alleyoop

ok,thanks allyoop...I'm not talking about the shaft that comes out of the engine,I'm talking about the piece that slides on that shaft that the variator slides open & close on....It seems like everything is working fine,I just can't believe it makes that much noise, the other 250b that I have is not that loud at all, actually it's quite.....Wow,what a difference between them....It rattles like it's going to fall apart...It was never this loud until a couple of weeks ago, until then it was quite like the other 250b......The springs in the clutch look good.....

I know what you greased it is called the BOSS, but if it is making that much noise do a little VIDEO maybe I can pinpoint it for you. Also what size weights do you have in there, maybe you got wrong size weights smaller in size. Alleyoop This is the BOSS that you greased

WOW!! That is not the weights(HAHA). You know what that sounds to me like the VARIATOR FAN plate is loose and hitting the cover, the nut may have come loose or the Fan plate was not put right and the nut is not actually tightening on the fan plate but on the splines on the crank. Happens to many others as well most have a washer on the outside of the fan and sometimes they forget to put the washer on so that the splines do not stick out beyond the fan and the nut tightens on the washer, which is against the fan. Take the cover off grab the fan and see if you can wiggle it. Alleyoop

I've already had it off & put it back on & it is on tight & it's on right...I took all that apart this morning.......I had it all apart this morning....Also had the clutch off......Could it possibly be something with the clutch,I did inspect it & it looked fine....

Take the cover off and start it and video it so I can see how the variator is working and the clutch. something is banging in there bud. Either that or its the crank. Alleyoop
