I don't know if it's even a forum option, but I would personally find it more convenient if, within any given thread, the "sort" was newest to oldest rather than the current oldest to newest. Saves a lot of scrolling through stuff I've already read. I'm just one vote, though; what do others think?

Aren't these now new to old. When I enter the area I see 'right on top' those with new questions asked. Not sure what you are wanting. .

WITHIN EACH THREAD, one sees the oldest, original post at the top, then the reply to that, etc., etc., etc. When a thread goes on for a considerable length of time, my personal druthers would be, when I open the thread, show me the latest "contribution" at the TOP of the first page. If I've been following the discussion anyway, I don't want to navigate down through all the preceding posts before getting to the new stuff. But as I said, that's just MY preference, others may not feel the same. Just throwing the idea up for discussion, and since JR hasn't chimed in, maybe it's not even technically possible.

Not possible as that change would require a total re-mapping of the HTML script of the part of the forum code called the Forum Wrapper. The problem lies in posting. What I mean here is for example say the last post on any page of a thread is at the top of the page and you looked at it and wanted to reply? You would then go to the very last post and reply, then it would be the last post and go to the top of the page pushing the last one you read one step down, not making it go to the very last post of the thread itself. Say if the thread was 5 pages long then every single page would then have the latest post at the top of each page.
I think I can code a "last post of the thread" button. It could be put by Back To Home and then on any reply on any page of the thread if you clicked on it the very last post would then appear and you could read or even reply then. This would be similar to the quote button but you wouldn't be quoting anyone. As we know one can be reading a post say on page two of a multi-post thread and see something that was posted by a member and want to answer that post or member directly you hit quote and then when you reply goes to the end of the very last post on the last page of the thread.
I'll put my thinking cap on.

Well, don't put a lot of time into it. One can always go to the last page of a thread, then the "go to bottom" icon -- not that big a deal. I'm in some forums where it is set up newest at the top, but not all web authoring software is the same. You have enough to worry about.
