Hello All Im in the process of getting a new engine. I thought I would start from scratch. I wanted to get opinions on Air Filters /Intakes Of course there is the Uni FIlter and the UNI Sock But then there are these i487.photobucket.com/albums/rr234/drierdan/Filter3.jpgi487.photobucket.com/albums/rr234/drierdan/Filter2.jpgAlso - What are your thought on jetting - THis engine with have one of these filters and an open exhaust. Regular Carb and 150cc engine. Currently my carb has 38 and 115 - I really really really don't want to burn up any more rings. I just want an engine that will last for a long time (so does mywife) Thanks Doug

One other thing
I like the Idea of more air flow, but I was never a fan of the additional noise you get from the intake side of the engine. (kind of a WAAAAAHHHH when you hit the throttle)
I would love to find a compromise between performance and noise
OF course with an eye towards having this engine last forever

I put that exact same "jet engine looking" (3rd) filter on my 50cc. I can confidently say it looks very cool but, Save your money!!!!! It's crap!!!!! Stick with an UNI or Cone K&N style. I have never tried a covered free flow filter. I would assume the cover has no more air flow than a standard air box. It's covered If ya don't want the noise this may work best if it fits. I say stick with a foam UNI. After like 5 diffrent filters I have found they work best for me. Don't forget the OIL!!! As for jet size I don't know on a 150.

If you remove the air box you must brace the front of the carb where the filter goes. Sooner or later your intake elbow will look like this and leak... Really hard to see when it is on the scooter... What cause this? The throttle cable! It pulls up on the carburator over and over again, cause it to flex and crack in time. The good news the manifolds are easy to repair with red silicone if you work it into the cracks and let it set.. but they will re-crack again Attachments:

Just an opinion but, if it's a 150 a chrome manifold can be picked up cheap on Ebay to prevent this very problem. I have one but, have not tried to install it on my 50cc yet. The intake is much bigger than my stock one. should just bolt on to a 150 if the frame and engine mounts are not in the way ;D Just an option to consider if they fit your set up.

I have a chrome intake manifold. The only Problem is that it raises the carb, thus making the filter hit square on the dreaded frame hump.
I may get a UNI "sock" - Any warnings against this?
The K&N look good, but I'm afraid that it make hit the hump. There is only 2 inches between the carb and the hump

LOL Great thread! ;D Timing even more precisely so. I'm like, *this* close to pulling the trigger on that 1st chrome-y metallic conical filter from Doug's post. I've seen similar designs sold locally for buggies, and they looked decent, but never came across one sized right for my carb. These are available for peanuts at an unnamed (yet very popular) online auction site. I was thinking one of those (maybe even with a foam sleeve?) might just be the trick. Anybody have experience with similar? If not, I may just have to try one...all in the name of scooter research, of course. For whatever it's worth, I'm looking at upjetting too. These temps are murder and I'm trying to help keep her cool by richening up. That means upjetting, which means new air filter too, and I might as well replace the intake while I've got it all tore apart, and... ;D ...and need to stop while I'm ahead if I can get that done, for now. The 38/115 is widely reported to be a final 'sweet spot' for a standard 150cc carb. YMMV of course, but that particular combo does seem to be what a lot of people settle into after a bit of tuning, so I figure that's as good a target to start with as any. If that's what your carb came with stock, that's pretty cool, as most come leaner. Still...if she'll take more, give it to 'er! Try hitting it with a 120 if the 115 doesn't seem to be sweet enough. Worst case scenario you're out $5 and have to put the 115 back in. Could have to tweak the needle...could luck out and be 'just right'. Hitting max richness without 'flubbing' seems to be the way to go, wherever that particularly happens to fall with your setup.

@ Bong Need to be careful of those chrome intakes... they can hold the carb on an angle and the jets come out of the gas... They can be adapted by changing the connector to the carb.. just make certain you carb is level... doug in San Diego Either UNI or K&N ...just make certain you oil them.. Some UNIs have a 12 degree elbow to help get around frame members...

You would be absolutely astounded by how many people never oil their filters...K&N or UNI... No wonder the rings fail on these scooters in 2000 miles! Didn't mean to insult your intelligence or experience... just the vast majority are clueless on this topic... that is why I mention it like a dirty CD.. (broken record for us old folks) ;

A lil' update... I ended up buying one of these: Not from that site specifically, but your basic Chi-qual of this style. It sucked. Don't buy one. I'll give more detail in the review section.
