news.msn.com/us/postal-service-to-cut-saturday-mail-to-trim-costsSeems like the Post Office is in the news all the time now and not always for the right reasons? It doesn't take them long to let you know they are not a Government agency but yet they always want help from the tax payer. If you run a business and that business is in trouble you do cut costs, but Saturday mail? Why not cut some of the useless Post Offices? I'll pick on my home state in an area where I lived for 15 years in Pike County. I lived in the midway point between Kirby and New Hope near the little community of Daisy which had it's post office shut down years ago. It is 12 miles between these two little towns. Up the road at Langley which is only 8 miles from where I lived is another post office and up the road from there only 7 more miles away is Albert pike with yet another post office. Then add the county seat of Glenwood which is less than 20 miles away is another post office. Think about it? 5 post offices in what I'm figuring a 60 mile radius at the most. shut them all down but the one (Glenwood) that's big enough to handle all that mail, all in Pike County. One post master, the necessary workers for the mail load there and you could keep all the rural mail carriers just route them from one location. Yes there would be loss of jobs, four post masters and workers which is not good but you would eliminate the overhead and costs of four other post offices. Makes good business sense. I read all the time where people fight to keep their post office for historical value and even some serve less than 100 people. Don't have to take away the historic value, make it a open museum, but if you're losing money then you need to do the things necessary to stay in business and this to me IMO makes more sense than what they are going to do? I use Priority Mail for all my shipments from my sharpening service. They give excellent service and at a lower rate in many cases when compared to UPS. As Bob says they are tied to the Fed Gov.. If they were allowed to operate as a private business they could makes some money.

I get a lot of packages on USPS myself so I'm glad they are still delivering on Saturday but to me if you are going to deliver a package on Saturday to someone, you had just as well bring their mail to them?

JR good point BUT 1st class mail & that kind are sorted in, either a separate facility, or just the other side of the building. Packages, etc are in their own section. Except at your lil post office, you know the ones that dont deliver, you have a PO box and gotta go get your mail. When it gets, idk, 2-3-4? steps beyond the local PO. its all machines, doing the sorting. letters fit one set of machines, packages above, different.
even in my 3rd class city, im sure 2-3-4 guys/girls can deliver all the Sat. packages in 1/2 day, instead of the 20 {idk} delivering 1st class mail.
Plus, yes i agree, make it a separate biz. Congress really started this mess, but they wont fix it

I would need a mailbox the size of refrigerator to hold my mail if I only checked it every two or three days! ;D JR

Some of that crap junk mail they must be making a fortune selling such a dish tv and direct tv. I usually get 2 of each every week. I never ever open or read any unsolicited junk mail and if you do, you become part of the problem. Guess thats why they have the big scrap barrels inside the post offices around here. I would gladly pay a lot more for a stamp if every body had to pay the same rate and the junk mail would more than likely stop. Easy way to stop junk mail. Open it all especially the ones with postage free envelopes. What most don't know is if they send you a postage paid envelope and you throw it away they spend nothing, use it and they pay now at a rate of $0.65. Take the visa credit card app and put it in the dish tv envelope, just make sure you name and address isn't on the papers, mail it to them. Put the dish tv in the visa envelope and mail. I love to send surveys that I get from one junk mail mailer to another. Heck if nothing else seal the envelope and mail it back with nothing in it or put some thin household trash in it. My wife says I'm nuts to do this (she may be right) but I do know my junk mail slows down to nothing when I do this for a spell. Telemarketers? Oh man I have a blast with them! I always say just a minute, haul butt to the bathroom sit on the commode, do that ever so loud grunting and then flush the commode with the phone sitting right on my lap! 9 out of 10 will already have hung up by the time the commode flushes, if the 1 out of 10 is still hanging in there I simply tell them thanks but not interested! I don't get many of these calls anymore! JR

They did not cut Saturday delivery of mail or packages. Priority mail still gives the best service. Because of my home based business I check my mail box daily and have a large parcel drop off box at the house gate for the PO to deliver my packages to.As for telemarketers I let my wife handle them. She makes short work of them. Because of my hearing impairment my clients know to contact me by email. The best way to solve the postal problem would be to cut them loose from government control, fire the Post Master General, do a corporate raid on UPS & FedEx, hire one of their better execs to run USPS and it would be making a profit in less than 5 years and the Feds would make a killing on the business taxes.

JR,you got some good ideas there with the junk mail--and the tele marketers ---I like to have fun with the phone sales people too--I realize they are trying to make a living so I sometimes try to get them to alter their product ,like when Owens Corning telemarketers called trying to sell roofing I asked for some cookware instead, and when they said they weren't trying to sell cookware,I told them to forget that roofing shingle and go get some glassware and call me back--lol--worked I guess ,I haven't heard from them lately---another time a lady called and without thinking I tried to get a date for my unmarried brother--she never called me again---better than internet dating ,I guess-lol

I do understand the logic of cutting out the useless post office these days since everyone seems to have a car or bike to get to any place of reasonable distance--but ,in some instances ,a post office in a small town is actually very useful in more ways than one--it becomes a place of social gathering daily to pickup mail and gossip about yesterday's happenings and possible future happenings...it is a way of life ...American way of life--a culture of rural life---I do have a small town in mind, and it is on the list of possible cuts---it is 91 inhabitants that live around close enough to walk to the PO every day and many do and it would be a shame to remove that facility....maybe things will get better soon---just another opinion of the situation -ride safe, fflintsrone
