I posted this over on Scooter Doc too.
Just a note to all. The night before last, the sirens over at the fire house went off. We turned the scanner on and the call out was for a motorcycle accident about a mile away. It turns out that the guy down the street was riding home after dark and a deer jumped out in front of him. He managed to miss it but ran his Harley into a ditch and went down. He wasn't seriously injured but was in the hospital overnight for observation.
We don't have a lot of deer around here but there are lots of cornfields and they aren't harvested yet.
Watch out for leaves too!
Be careful my friends!

You have made a good point, Prof. Around here we have many deer and I always keep an eye out for them at night. At night if they are on the side of the road and your lights hit them they will see their shadow and jump away from it and right into the road. In SGA I had that happen 3 times. Leaves can be as bad as sand or gravel so far as being slippery.

They have been very bad here lately and it's going to be worse soon as one of the first deer hunting seasons opens here this Saturday. When the hunts start they move more and in big groups. Just can't imagine what it would be like to hit one on a scooter! Hey where ya been CC? JR

JR - been busy. Working on the house/yard. We still have a ton of work to do. Today's an off day. Lots of rain & high winds this PM. I'm taking it easy. I pulled a shoulder muscle the other day when I was running the chain saw so I'm not doing much.
We were away at the end of August. My son finally got engaged so we took him and his fiance down to the Chesapeake for a few days.

Deer are our biggest night driving problem here in Michigan. Herds of them 15-20 crossing the road at night. We are 1.5 million over populated the past 3 years...so instead of extending the season from 15-30 days for we hunters....they imported 60 cougars to bring the herds down. Dumb move by the DNR..as many are having their goats and sheep killed. We had one deer to scooter hit last month in another county. A 200lb Buck did some serious damage to the scoot and rider. We swapped out 18w bulbs out for 35w so now we can see them way ahead of time. last week while sitting in my portable deer blind...I heard a "grrrr....wowwww" off in the distance..so I packed it in and left. So now our roads and woods are not safe?

So now our roads and woods are not safe? We have similar problems with smaller axis deer. Although we have a longer season for hunting with a bow or knife and kanaka maoli have gathering rights. Axis deer are an imported pest and it should be year round hunting even if its just bow or knife. Same goes for the chukkars \ pheasants \ grouse etc, all very tasty imported pests I should be allowed to get rid of year round. They belong in my belly not the wild. Importing cougars seems a little extreme, are they native and just got wiped out? or have folks not learned from swamp rats, cane toads etc. Has anyone seen pictures of Australia before the rabbits got loose?

Hunting with a knife? That sounds like something JR might try. I haven't hunted in a few years but I think we now have a spear season here in PA. LOL Jack! Hey USMCdoc - the state Game Commision denies they exist but folks have pix of cougars here.

Hey USMCdoc - the state Game Commision denies they exist but folks have pix of cougars here. They did the same here for years...I would catch them on my deer trail cam....was told by Game Commission that pics were just feral house cats and looked bigger due to the raindrops on the cam lens....or said they were stray dogs.. FINALLY 2 years ago they released a report admitting they had released them here...but said it was ok because they were all collar tagged. Ok since when has a collar kept ANY predator from doing what they do best....stalk and kill smaller critters?.. They were native here in Michigan...the last one being reported killed in 1908 after many attacks on farm animals and small children being killed. As a Chippewa descendant I understand and respect the balance of nature as an avid hunter and fisherman myself. But adult deer can outrun a Cougar as the Cougar is good only for a short high speed sprint...whereas Deer can rules flat out for miles. So what does this mean?...they go after unweary domestic animals and anything that cannot out sprint them. After one was hit and killed by a truck..they said it was tagged and wandered here from Iowa (yeah..sure ok long @ss walk).. But keeping on topic...we love fall riding...it is beautiful...as long as you watch out for critters that wait by the road..hoping a vehicle passes soon so they can run in front of it.. ;D

LoL layed the scooter down in a corner leaving parking lot coming home from work this morning! Not much damage at all just a few minor scratches, scuffed grip & small dent on heat shield....no torn clothes or cuts just a tender hip. Man did I laugh my ass off. No clue what happened. I do carve turns & ride it hard so could have been operator error as I tried to get my ass away from Walmart. Was pretty cold tho this morning think it was condensation trying to frost on the fluid stained lot that made it slick in that area tho. God I wish I could see the security footage LoL! Glad it was a minor biff & reminded me I may be a bad ass on a scooter but still a bad ass made of flesh. So can't prove it was weather related but will make sure to keep this happening in mind as the weather turns colder & the frosts more frequent
