The report said she had a helmet on but it was not DOT approved. Here in Mass. DOT helmets are required even for mopeds. However, some of these helmets are not very cool looking. Many (most) Harley riders around here are using skull caps which are definitely not DOT and they are not bothered by law enforcement. Of course, a lot of them are running straight pipes and are also not bothered by law enforcement. It's a Harley thing?

Anybody who rides US 81 without protective gear is just plain stupid and suicidal. Of course I saw them on the Turnpike this weekend without any gear too.

I hate to see anyone hurt or killed while riding. I've seen it all too often. This wasn't even a crash. It's VERY unusual for someone to simply fall off the back of a bike going down a highway. Even someone who's not familiar with riding passenger will usually grab solidly onto the rider or parts of the bike if they lose their balance.
We'll never know the REAL story, but I think there's much more to this than what's been reported. Something caused that lady to loose her balance, and fall completely off the cycle. Whether her fault, the rider's fault, or something else, it's one more tragic lesson about being careful when riding.
A while back, a lady and her husband were checking out my scooter at the local Wally World. The guy wanted a crotch-rocket, the wife didn't... LOL! No surprise there... The wife asked how fast the scooter would go, and I told her a little over 50 mph. She took great comfort in that, and told her hubbie THAT would be OK. After all, crotch-rockets go near 200 mph, and are dangerous, but you could hardly get hurt on a little scooter that only goes 50... Duh...
I couldn't let it go without reminding both of them that kissing the concrete at 50 on a 9-hp scooter is just as destructive as doing it on a 400-hp screamer.
It's often hard to understand just how some folks rationalize their pre-conceived notions...
Ride safe, and DEFINITELY please don't fall of the back of ANYTHING... Not even a horse! Come to think of it, ESPECIALLY a horse. Even more so if he's a TALL one!

I'd rather ride the turnpike than I-81. I'd have a better chance for survivel......

She may have simply passed out and fell, happened to me recently, fortunately I was sitting on something other than a bike.

I agree Flyangler we'll probably never really know, but for sure it's sad. Glad to see you and Welcome to the forum!

I get kidded about it now and then but I wear helmet, jacket, boots, gloves, and heavy work pants when ever I ride. (WallowWorld carries some great carpenters pants by Dickie). And that is for summer riding. In the winter I go to the leather jacket. I am, after 75 years, rather fond of my skin. Down here we have biker wannabes dressed in shorts, thing sandels, T shirts and the obligatory helmet. When they wreck those Harley Piggies they leave a greasy spot on the highway that takes days to wear off and if they survive the make the plastic surgeons Mercedes payments for the next 12 months. Moral of story: Dress to protect yourself at all times.

wolf, that is good advice. any one can take a tumble and road rash is bad even at 25 mph. i just never thought about it until you pointed it out. i think i am going to join you with all of your gear. i like my skin too! i might even add knee, elbow, and ankle pads!

Something like this aired on local news near my haunts just a while back. A rider and his young helmeted niece riding pillion were heading home from the annual hot air balloon fest, left the road and crashed into a wooded area... passenger died, operator hurt seriously. Heard the details from locals familiar with the family involved: Apparently niece was tired from the long day out in the sun and all, nodded off on the ride home, started falling off, uncle tried to grapple her and lost control. They were only a couple miles from their destination.

I have another rule. I never ride double on my scoot or behind another rider.
