If there is anything at all about Chinese Scooters that I have found really confusing, it's trying to get accurate information regarding engines.
I am interested in knowing what the difference is (especially in the variator) between a CN250 and a CF250 engine.
I am trying to get accurate information as to what size (diameter) the variator should be - and I ain't having much luck.
Can someone help?

This is the cn250 engine (Honda clone/helix) it is a 244cc. The variator in this takes 6 roller weights, not sure size, JR and others here would know that Attachments:

The CN250, CF250, CH250, and what is commonly known as the GY6 250 are all variations of the Honda clone 244cc engine. They are all vertical cylinder designs with variations occurring in the CVT area. Engine parts are pretty well interchangeable between all models.
The variator fan for the CF250 is 5.5 inches. The variator fan for the CN250 is 5 inches.

That's correct Richard when it comes to the 257cc engine people just say linhai or yamaha/linhai.
The hard part about all of this is the parts for instance one can google cn250 or helix clone 244cc engine like and say stator. The CN250 stator is supposed to have 18 coils but you can ask for a stator on the Tank 250 and it'll tell you the engine is a 244cc or even a CN250 clone and then you can find a statr listed at 17 coils for it? Same thing on the CF250.
Best thing to do before you order a stator for the vertical clone engine is measure first and order second.
I've not seen this issue with the linhai clone.

JR I suspect the difference between the 17 and 18 coil stator is the 17 coil stator is for an AC magneto style ignition and the 18 coil is for the DC style ignition.

This is not correct... This is a YP250 (Yamaha copy) and comes in three sizes. The CF,CH,& CN are all vertical Honda (Helix, Elite) copies and nearly identical. I don't know what differences they have...perhaps the variator as mentioned by others here. Below is some more info...
The Yamaha Linhai VOG (LH170MM) (LH173MN) is a quality, horizontal, single-cylinder, 4 stroke, liquid cooled, SOHC engine. This is a very common engine found in many scooters, quads, ATVs, buggies, and mopeds. The VOG 250 has a displacement of 249cc with a bore of 69mm and a stroke of 66.8mm. The VOG 260 has a displacement of 257cc with a bore of 70mm and a stroke of 66.8mm. The VOG 300 has a displacement of 275cc with a bore of 73mm and a stroke of 66.8mm. The transmission for all is a CVT automatic transmission. All use electric start.
