This past Monday marked the end of a long journey for my wife that started back in 2008 when she returned to college after being out of school for over 20 years. She graduated this past Monday as a RN and already has a job waiting for her this coming Monday in one of the leading hospitals in this state. Needless to say I'm extremely proud of her and this evening we are taking a little trip to celebrate and have some fun until Friday evening when we have to return because of my stepson's job that he starts this Saturday so he's happy because this is his first job at 16. He is saving for his car insurance because we're going to get him one soon and that's the deal, we get the car, he pays for maintenance and insurance. So we'll see you all this Friday and I'll leave you with a picture of the graduate and one good looking dude!

Hey MC that was clean old kids clothes and it's very good packing! Didn't want those goodies busted did ya? I did use them some for shop rags but I've found old clothing is some of the best packing one can use. Nope you can trash it.
No Terrilee I'm very good at household chores, my mother taught me young how to cook and clean, oldest child of 3 and in my early years she had 4 major back operations that kept her bed ridden a lot in my early years. My dad came home many times late at night from work to a meal that I as a 5 year old prepared with my mother's direction and teaching. I also learned a lot form my grandmother. When it comes to taking care of a household I'm not one of these helpless guys who has to have a mommie to wash and cook for me. Nope I even do the grocery shopping, take kids to school, make all the games they go to in their sports, help with their home work.
I helped my wife along in these college years along with my kids do laundry, cook, clean and helped her many hours study. Made many a pot of coffee when she pulled the all nighters before a big test. Pushed her when she needed pushing, patted her on the back when she needed it and was there when she needed help.
She is not only my wife, the love of my life but also my best friend I'm a lucky guy to have her.

I am a high school teacher here in South Africa and as I always tell the students when they finish matric (grade 12) I would say now don't stop there carry on studying. So Mrs. Ryan don't stop now!! Working in this day and age is a life long learning process.
I am also a proud father as my daughter who lives in the States and studying at George Mason in Fairfax Arlington VA recently completed her four year degree in communication and she did it summa cum laude. Rather heart breaking sitting here down south and I couldn't attend her graduation so I made her promise me she will continue now and do her masters and hopefully by that time I will reside in Fairfax as well so I can shed a tear on US soil.

Speaking of continuing education I have a friend who's 50 YO daughter was a RN then became a nurse/practitioner, any way to make the story short he just attended her graduation from medical school and she is now a doctor. One step at a time.

Wel done, Mrs. Ryan, well done. You have a meaningful career ahead of you helping those who need health care. My daughter is a Nurse and has never regretted her career choice.

Thanks guys for all the well wishes and yes she could go back to school even while working and with just a few hours get her bachelors degree but right now she's not going to for several reasons. One is since we are now rasing my two grandkids the extra income will be nice, we need to upgrade to a vehicle that will sit at least 6 or 7 seat belted of course and we are wanting to remodel the back part of our home that is a large screened in type porch into a closed patio type with a fireplace and such and upgrade our carport. Plus my wife loves water and she says she is going to put her in a swimming pool! Two for the next 13 weeks she will be working a schedule with another nurse that is her schedule. It's basically a final internship and we already know this lady works a lot of hours and overtime. If she works 7 days a week my wife must too. After this is completed then my wife's schedule will be Mon., Tues., and Wed each week, she works 12 hour days and gets paid for a 40 hour week. She has to work at least 1 weekend a month. What's amazing about this hospital is people fight to work the night and weekend shift. There's a good reason for it too, night shift pays a flat $5 per hour more and weekends pays $3 per hour more. Lastly most people especially kids that just are out of high school with hard work and hustle can make a LPN in 1 year and if you fast track a RN in 18 months but the problem for my wife was a lot of the material one needs to know to become a nurse she didn't have in high school plus again she hasn't been in school for over 20 years. She went back to college first to learn, algebra, chemisty and even had to take advanced english courses. Algebra? yep it's one of the things you just got to know in nursing for all of these ratio's of medicines, and drugs they administer in fact part of her job interview was a long math test you have to pass with a score of 85 just to be hired. My wife had never even had algebra in high school. Man that was tough! Nice thing now is when the kids come home with math she says "hey I know how to do that!" Makes it easier on this old man! With all that it took my wife 4 years to work her way up to RN status, she first took the LPN course and got her license for that and with the school she was at Baptist Health Schools they automatically accept their trained LPN's to the RN program if you choose to go. So in short my wife is tired of school for awhile, mention to her about going back to school and she'll throw a rock at ya! But a nursing carreer or even being a teacher is a good way to get financial help. In this state both are in extremely high demand and there are a lot of grants and money to go to school if you choose one of these professions. The employment division in the nursing field or even some other medical jobs will pay one full year of tutition, buy all of your books, uniforms if needed, up to $275 per week to attend and $50 a week in gas expense if you drive more than 35 miles one way to school. You can choose if you want to use it to be a LPN or RN, they won't pay both. We were on that program when she completed her LPN, nice to be paid to go to school and we were allowed to keep her pell grant money, sure helped with the RN part of the finances. Plus nurses are so badly needed that some hospitals will pay your last year of tutition back to you if you sign up to work for at least two years with their hospital. Her graduating class was 138 students out of a class that started out at 190, not bad considering to pass Baptist Health Schools course you must have a 77% or higher to pass and believe me their course is tough! She went yesterday and had her picture took and got her new work badge, like a kid with a new toy! 4 years of hard work and now it's going to pay off not only for her but for people that she will care for. Yep John got my own nurse now if I can just get her to baby me like she will all of her patients to come! JR

And talk about demand for RN's one hospital in Springfield was giving away a brand new car to sign up for a 3 year contract over and above the regular high pay there.
One couple here locally, both RN's used to work just the weekend together in little rock each week commuting together, sleeping at the hospital between shifts, that were knocking down over three times the pay at the local hospital.
Probably the only job that will never go away or get outmoded with technology as so many are. john

So true John and my wife and I also have thoughts of going on the travling circuit. That is if we ever get through raising kids? I've got two dear friends husband and wife that both went back to nursing school and last year went to France as nurses. all expenses paid, room and board and 150K a piece a year.
