In Discussion with another member on another site i brought up the idea of changing the gears to get more top end and lower engine RPM. It has been suggested that the bike couldn't handle it without complete loss of bottom end, which on my scoot is super strong. I just cant believe that the gears are offered out there only for scoots that have had engine upgrades. Any one out there done gears to a stock bike?

That's what gears do....to gain top speed you will sacrifice the low end. They do make all kinds of ratio's and you would not have to go to a radical ratio.
Better yet have you tried changing the weights in the variator yet. Also the variator, putting on a larger dia. one, and also a bit longer belt. The higher the belt goes in the variator the faster you go at lower rpm. You can mark the inside of the variator with a magic marker then go for a ride and see how much of the marker is rubbed off. If it doesn't go all the way to the top you are loosing out on speed. john

Yep I know the bottom end will be less but lighter rollers combined with a stiffer contra and a 4.5 variator will give a lot of that back. What Im looking for is an increase at top and a drop in RPM at average road condition speeds.

put in 15/38 gears the ones on there are most likely 13/40 and you will gain 6-8mph top end and at a lower rpms once you reach speed you can back off the throttle and cruise at lower rpms and keep the speed. with 15/38 you will hardly notice any low end loss. Alleyoop

Thanks Alley, I am going to transplant my good GY6 150 into a better looking body (the old one is missing parts and in very poor condition) soon. At that time I will take advantage of it being accessible and go over it with CVT mods. and a gearing change. No engine mods. are planned and I live in a totally flat location and normally ride below 45 mph. I weigh 165 lbs. so its a light load.

You have the Ideal situation for up gearing, Flat plus your light to boot, I think you will love it But either way post your results GOOD or BAD. Alleyoop

Now the big question's, from some video's it is just pop off the rear clutch assembly pull the small cover and go to work. On one video a guy had split the case and really did a lot. Two different engine types featured. I am under the impression that the GY6 is constructed so the pop the clutch remove the cover and do it, no case split needed.

Yep, you got it piece of cake, the only thing you have to take the gear off the Existing short shaft and press on the gear on the NEW shaft. The big gear should slip off and on unless that is also pressed on then you will have to take the drive shaft off to put on the new big gear. On mine the shaft had spline and the gear just slips off and on. ALleyoop

That was the case for me. I had 13/40 stock and went to a 15/38 set up also dropped my weights to 9 gram sliders and installed the yellow 1500 main clutch spring. With my set up i increased my acceleration and added top end to GPS 62 mph. Instead of a press I used a pulley puller to push out an re install the small gear only took about 30 minutes from start to test ride.

Alleyoop I ended up with 4 mph on flats but if I hit a down hill I would get 6 mph so my top speed ended up being 60 to 62 mph on my gps. With dropping the weights and adding the yellow main spring it put my RPM's right at 7000 rpm WOT.

hi travler 1 here ive already changed gears in my lance milan 150 about 2.5 weeks ago put in the 15/38 from scrappy dog , lost a smidge on the take of but the clime from 10 to 50 really nice didnt lose any end actually gained 5 mph i did how ever go from 17gm rollers to 14gm sliders in my 115mm variator to compensate for the gears big differance . the gears are easy to do the hardest part was finding some one with the proper tools to push out the old gear and push in the new one the taller gear theres nothing to it you do as alley and these other guys tell you and theyll get you thru it and youll be fine and happy

Thanks guys. Been so busy, took a part time job to break up the Honey Do list that turned full time once they found out what old retired guys are capable of! Thinking now while I am in there I will go to the larger variator Scrappy sells with a yellow contra spring and order 14 to play with.
