This morning I was checking air pressure in both tires. Front was fine but rear needed a few pounds. As I moved the rear tire so I can get the air pump on it I noticed the wheel stopped moving freely. I gave it a hard spin and it stops in the same spot. Did it again and stopped in the same spot. It's like the brake comes on at a certain point.
Any clue as to what's causing this?
Thanks Speed Racer

Some think the rear wheel just free spins and that's not the case, could be the clutch needs a good blowing out as it's dirty and causing some friction between the pans and drum. Other than that if you had a gear oil leak which you would probably notice the brake pads could be a little tight?

JR, I just replaced the entire clutch a few weeks ago as the old one was squeaking and pretty worn out. There is no gear oil leak that I can see. The rear wheel with the engine running and clutch engaged has a wobble to it. The entire wheel and brake rotor doesn't run straight.
I'm almost at the point of having to change the rear wheel as it has 5,000 miles on it and not too much thread left.

Ok then lets get that tire ordered and when you take it apart we got to find the wobble may have a bad outside bearing on the wheel bracket of have you checked the main axle nut to see if it's tight?

Forgot to mention if I try and shake wheel right to left there is no side motion to it. Also have Vipers on front and rear. Can I replace rear with different brand?

Don't see whay not? Most people want to keep their treads matched but that's up to the individual, never heard of any issues with two differnt brand tires.

Hey Speedy I am gonna follow this closely to see what your problem is since I too have that same problem. Mine will free wheel tho just doesn't run true. It seems when looking down from the top with no plastic on that the bracket on the muffler side might be a little longer than the one on the tranny side. And when you speed up the rpms the tire and and entire brake assembly has what looks to be a wobble to it but same here when you try to shake the thing by hand there is no side to side free movement. Also when looking at it from the back you can see the wheel and all is cocked to one side.

Hey Texan, I'm going to take a close look at it from behind. But we sure do have the wobble when it is free wheeling, and yup no side to side motion at all. It's like the wheel is not round.
Going to need to order a new tire as this one has seen better days. The bearing JR mentioned bothers me as I have no idea as to what it looks like, how to get one, and how it is installed.
I guess I'll purchase another Viper and hope to get more then 5,000 miles out of it. Maybe JR will explain more about the bearing or bearings.

Speedracer,5,000 mi. on the Vipers really isn't that bad , the people that are running Pirelli Diablos on their 12'' Vespas are lucky to get 2,000 mi. on them. Does seem strange that theres no play in the rear wheel if the bearing is going but with these bikes you never know.

Flyangler, I thought I would get a lot more out of the rear tire, but if Vespas are only getting 2000 miles I hit the jackpot. It's ordered and should arrive around the 18th. I hope JR gives me the info needed about the rear bearing so I can this done all at the same time.

Hey Speedracer 5k on rear tire is awesome! My wifes Pirelliis are going to be lucky to get 3500? I've had the best luck with the Avons!
