For anyone changing roller weights.... do NOT use the Harbor Freight 12v "emergency" impact wrench. I had the pleasure of fixing my CVT on the side of the road a few weeks ago because of it. Nut came loose, variator finds started grinding against the CVT cover. By the time I stopped, the variator fan plate had gone a tiny bit crooked, which put slight nicks on the shaft.. making it a REAL joy to get off. Had to sand down the shaft, slide it all back on, dropping the roller weights out of it about 20 times in the process.. on a 105 degree day.
ANYWAY, get the larger impact wrench from HF.. the big red one.. and use a lock washer.. and threadlock.
Lesson learned!

Been there, done that. I used the DeWalt impact wrench that is cloned by Harbor Freight with the red impact wrench you mentioned. I still lost my variator nut and chewed up my fan. Either the belt was pinched in the variator or my tightening guesstimate with the wrench was a little low? I know a lot of people may be trying to avoid the use of some type or variator wrench to keep the variator from turning while tightening and that may be the reason for only using the impact wrench for tightening even when a specific torque value is required. I bought a heavy duty strap wrench and tightened the variator according to specs with a torque wrench. I also used a lock washer, locktite, and a self locking nut. It's all good know.

i have the chicago 12v impact wrench from autozone $28,used it many times, and i'm happy with with it...easy on using those impact wrench, you don't want to overtighten and strip the bolt threads, most of the time it's the operator's error more than the tools error. cruiser is right about using locktite washer.
