Howdy folks...I just got my 2008 Xingyue 260 back on the road yesterday and today....yup....back off the road. I went to start her up, she turned over a couple times and then, nothing...dead start button. SO, I looked around, checked the 4 fuses behind the glove box and they're good. It was time to get home so I tried jumping the solenoid and the starter turned but no start (no spark)....looked at the coil, touched it and HOT!!! Also, the previous owner (I just bought this 2 weeks ago) had the coil zip tied to the frame rail meaning the mounting ears weren't grounded. There was however, a green wire attached to the mounting ear, running back to the swing arm (where the battery is grounded too) that was missing a lot of insulation. I saw it before, but figured the moron had stripped it or something. I am pretty sure it doesn't belong there now. I am pretty sure there are only supposed to be 2 wires going to the coil, so it probably doesn't belong there. It was a ground so I didn't worry. Anyways, I noticed that frayed ground wire was very hot as well. I guess the coil shorted out. Anyways, I left the ignition key on and few minutes later the coil popped and spewed out goo and I turned the key off immediately. Anyways, I am scared now because the start button does nothing and I've got a fried coil. Do you think the coil being shorted/fried would make my starter switch not work? I am scared this may end up being an electrical nightmare. I don't know where to start and I am not good with electrical. I am great with the mechanical stuff...but this-is beyond me. I knew I was buying a basket case. It was kid owned so who knows what he did or didn't do...but it was cheap. Unfortunately it's my only motorized transport so I'm gonna be riding a bicycle to work until I get it going again. Any ideas? I KNOW I need a coil, what else should I be looking for? Thanks in advance for any advice Read more: scooterdoc.proboards.com/thread/12443/new-member-big-problem-xy260t#ixzz3z4oqDSGO

UPDATE: Well maybe not as bad as it seems. In my anger and freaking out last night, I didn't slow down to think and assumed the worst. This morning after a rest and some contemplation, I disconnected the wires to the coil and hit the start button and she turned over. So I am semi-relieved...I will order a coil and hopefully, that is the only problem. I KNOW it's bad...I just hope it's failure was self-inflicted and not caused by another issue. I will update what happens in a few days. And thanks to who ever linked the post with the one I made on scooterdoc. I am new to using these forums and I had no idea you could do that. So far I feel much better knowing there is a whole community of folks who have dealt with the same issues I am having and are so willing to help and give good advice. Thanks! My goal is to save and get a nice used Burgman or Silverwing which are plentiful in central FL where I live. Many owned by the snowbirds who live here in the Winter in their RV's. I have seen some beautiful scooters that can be had for $2-3K. I figure I can save up in 5-6 months IF I don't have to spend a fortune keeping this one on the road. If it gets TOO bad, I will just pedal my bike for a few months. But scooter fever has got me. I have owned many sportbikes and cruisers over the years, but can't afford them anymore and need something practical that gets good mileage.

Here's a question I just thought of...could I use an automotive style coil...I know the old ones were just simple, 2 wire designs? Just until I can get the correct one for my scoot?

All coils pretty much work the same right? One lead is power, one is trigger...it's grounded through the mounting holes. I'll give it a go! Thanks!

Just found the right handle brake light switch doesn't seem to be operating well....no click. I see this is on the same circuit that feeds power to the ignition coil. Could this have caused trouble with the coil or cdi?

Do a search for - 2008 Xingyue 260cc scooter coil - and see what comes up for you. I buy plenty from searches and usually in about a week I have the part in hand.
I am not electrical either and have been working on my HOBBY for way too long. My wife calls it my hobby as I have spent way too much time on it this last year. Just sitting in the garage with no covers on and chasing the problem of not running. I am getting closer as I have changed out just about all the electrical items with no luck. Soon it will be on the side walk with a sign - PLEASE TAKE ME.
Where I live I have found no one willing to work on Chinese scooters. Closest is Phoenix area and not many there either. If not running how do I get it to them?
Anyway, I have not had any trouble getting new parts in short order. Do look around though as I see prices from a few dollars to lots of dollars for the same part.

I have found the coil @ scrappydogscooters.com for $25. Which I will order on friday. I am just trying to find something that will work temporarily so I don't have to pedal 10 miles a day. I am gonna stop at the Tru Value hardware after work, they sell buggies/atv's and the like (no scooters) but MAYBE they'll have a coil that will work. What I am finding out through my internet searching is this: My coil has 2 spade terminals, one for power coming from the brake light switches, and another (i guess it's the trigger, from the CDI). Many of the cdi coils I am seeing, only have one spade. I am guessing (with my limited understanding) that on those scooters, the CDI pulses the voltage to the coil and supplies the power through the same wire. But on mine, constant power is supplied to the coil with one wire and another is a trigger from the CDI, which forces the coil to discharge thus making spark. Please correct me if I am wrong, I am just ASSUMING that's how it works. So my mission today, after work is to find a cdi coil with 2 spades, indicating it works like mine. My hopes aren't that high, it'll just be nice to not have to wait until I can order the right one. I live in a small town and this is my only shot of finding something locally that will work. We have no other places that would deal in these kind of parts. So if not, I'll just order it from scrappydog and ride my bicycle for a few days.

It'd be easy if I lived in Tampa or Gainesville, lot's of scooter stores and repair shops. But I am pretty much on my own out here in Bushnell, FL. My biggest problem is that if my scoot breaks, I am pumping pedals and can't get much done. I had a 50cc Roketa that I should have kept for just this reason. I wanted to actually, but a guy offered my cash and I accepted....Oops! Lesson learned!

If not running how do I get it to them? bobf, you have way more patience than I. I would've long since rented a cycle trailer from UHaul, about $35, and taken it up to someone in Phoenix who can fix it. Which of course is of no help whatsoever to scooterglutton, sorry 'bout the sidebar.

Even if I could rent a trailer for $35 I don't really have anything to tow it with. No heavy vehicles, no truck, not liking to drive in Phoenix let alone drive a trailer. That is $70 buck both ways, up to fix and back home some day later. We do have a couple motor cycle and scooter shops in town but when I talked to one they said no way and the other said we try not to. I might be able to go back to them and plead for some help, they may give it a try. Otherwise, I am busy learning while I struggle so not a total loss. Take care. I will win eventually.

OK, sorry a reply took so long but I have had so much going on I didn't get to working on this thing till a couple days ago. Anyways, the ignition coil was the only problem (thank the gods), I installed the new one and away I went. The old one was improperly installed, only one of the mounting ears was attached to the metal mounting bracket, and the metal mounting bracket was only zip-tied to the frame rail. I cleaned up the mounting bracket where it used to be welded to the frame rail, and re zip tied it very tight so it's getting a good ground. Eventually I could have it re-welded I guess, but for now it should be fine...I used nuts and bolts to attach BOTH sides of the coil to the bracket. For now it appears I am good to go (until the next case) may that be as far down the road as possible (knock on wood). Thanks to you all for your help and concern, I know I may have over-reacted...I am paranoid like that
