Fly scooter cadenza 2009 2400miles
Hello all, This evening while riding my scooter home. The Engine all of a sudden died on me. I pulled over to the side And try to restart it But The starter made a noise I've never heard before. I also checked for any oil leaks thinking I may have blew the engine But there was none. When I got home, I checked the scooter for spark And I had spark.
I thought Maybe at blew out my starter But then again would a blown out starter cause the scooter to die? Then I thought CDI but if that were the case I would not be getting spark.
Here is a video I shot to document the noise The scooter was making when I try to start it. Any input would be greatly appreciated! thank you

First thing you want to do is Adjust the Valves adjust the valves to .004 inchs both of them. With that many miles they are probably tight and the exhaust valve is staying open and not sealing and no compression. And no compression then it doesn't produce enough suction to draw gas into the intake. Alleyoop

Also if you watch the video It seems like the flywheel is just spinning And it's not catching anything. When before this happened it never sounded like that When starting scooter.

Ok, that noise it is making sounds like the starter clutch, take the plug out and stick your finger in the hole and hold it nice and snug and open the throttle wide open and hold it and crank it. If it has descent compression and turning the crank it will lift your finger off the hole. Alleyoop

Alleyoop I'm sorry I'm still sort of a rookie with these issues.which plug and hole are you referring to and where would it be located. Thanks

The Spark plug hole, take the SPARK PLUG out and stick your finger in the spark plug hole all the way down you want to plug the hole with your finger JUST NICE AND SNUG to test if you have descent compression. DON'T worry it will not take your finger off(HAHA). It will just sort of LIFT your finger off the hole if there is DESCENT COMPRESSION, IF you just feel a little pressure then your compression is low and first thing is re-check your valves. Alleyoop

Alleyoop I stuck my finger in the spark plug hole and it didn't lift my finger. I will check the valves when I get off work. Just for we are on the same page if the scoots valves are closed it will cause the started/clutch not to catch?

BUMMER!! Well here is the thing the STARTER CLUTCH may not even be turning the CRANK and the piston is not moving up and down. Can you verify that by cranking it and looking at either the FLYWHEEL TURNING or the VARIATOR TURNING when you crank it. It should be turning pretty good when cranking it. DID YOU HOLD THE THROTTLE WIDE OPEN WHEN YOU DID THIS WITH THE FINGER? YOu have to hold the THROTLE WIDE OPEN WHEN DOING THIS so it sucks in as much air as possible to get the best compression reading. Alleyoop

The flywheel is turning When I press the ignition button. But it's not catching anything. Also I'll put my finger in the spark plug hole again. Maybe I did it wrong.

I tried again and put my finger in the spark plug hole and it still didn't push my finger up.

Ok, lets check something out. take the spark plug out and stick a straw in the hole and just turn the flywheel or variator with your hand and see if the straw moves up and down. Alleyoop

Yes the straw did move up and down.

Good, but the problem is no compression so, Lets check if the compression is rings or valves. Pour about half oz of oil down the spark plug hole and do the FINGER COMPRESSION again REMEMBER HOLD THE THROTTLE WIDE OPEN and see what it does to your finger. Alleyoop

Alleyoop I put oil in the spark plug hole and did the finger test and still nothing!!! I'm stumped!! Do you think the starter could be bad??

Well with oil down there and still no compression points to the VALVES. So take the valve cover off and look at the valves and springs and see if anything is broke may want to take a couple of pictures and put them up here so I can see the valves as well. Then bring it up to TOP DEAD CENTER again and check the gaps. .004 inchs on both of them, put the spark plug back in and see if it acts better. But the noise sure sounds like the STARTER CLUTCH, do you have a KICK STARTER on it if so you may want to try starting using the KICKSTARTER. Alleyoop
