Hello,

I have just brought a non-runner Honda SGX 50 and was told it had good compression and good spark. The compression seems okay, but there is no spark.  I noticed that there was no battery included/connected and wondered if i actually needed a battery to get a spark?  Thanks.

No I don't think it will need a battery but I do think it would be easier to start with one. This scooter is unique in the fact the CDI gets it's power from the R/R so if you have no spark the first thing is to check all the wiring connections and then look for voltage from the wire going from the R/R to the CDI.

I have seen the other topics on this forum regarding this bike and seen R/R pop up a-lot, is that the 'Regulator Rectifier'?

I'm going to be away this weekend so can't really test anything, but i will be sure to look at the stuff mentioned and will get back to you once done so.

Yes R/R = Regulator/Recifier.

Hello,

So i checked the wiring connections, all seem fine. Then checked voltage stuff, all seem okay apart from the white wire, that is completely dead. Not sure if this is a problem or not.

We know this diagram is for this scooter but white wire? You need to tell me if it is white or white/blue? If it is actually white then you need to tell me what wire it is as in it runs from this to that on the diagram.

Ok this scooter has a CDI/coil combination and like I told you, it's gets it's power from the R/R. The system colors are a tad different from the diagram but form my working with the previous owner and research I know what is what pretty well so here we go.

CDI colors

Black/white = ground, you said no voltage and that is correct. In the diagram it has B/W to the battery
Red/Black = Voltage input from R/R. The other fellow with this scooter verified this wire in his previous thread

Now the other two wires are hard to tell exactly but they look like

Yellow/blue or green
blue/white

One of these goes to the stator and is the pulse signal wire that tells the CDI when to fire.

The other goes to the handle bar engine kill switch.


R/R

Red/black = voltage output to the CDI
Red = R/R output charging wire to the battery
Yellow = is either stator input voltage or engine kill switch wire
White = is either stator input voltage or engine kill switch wire
Green = side stand kill switch wire

Now you can test theses wires with a multi meter easily

Basically you need to check for voltage on that red/black wire off of the R/R while turning the engine over. If you have no voltage then check the yellow or white wire going to the R/R. If the Red/black out of the R/R is putting out good voltage and you still have no spark then you've got a bad plug wire or bad CDI/coil.

Okay so i've checked the voltage and it seems fine. I brought another CDI, still no spark.  Not sure where to go from here.

Check all the grounding on the scooter to make sure all wires are clean and grounded well, especially the negative battery cable that goes from the battery to the frame. Also check to make sure the engine is grounded as well. Lastly did you try a different spark plug?

Also I didn't look closely on the diagram but does this scooter have a engine kill switch on the handlebar?

I think it does, this bike was stolen recovered and has no electrical stuff like lights/indicators ect.. Also appears to be hot-wired, with a 2-way split wire coming from the left handlebar, 1 side connected to a green wire other side connected to a black/white wire.

Note: The red and the black wire what the ignition barrel is connected to are disconnected by the way.

This could be the problem from the start, but i just assumed they had it running with this setup originally.

Yes i tried another spark plug from a working bike.  Still no spark.

Right there is 2 wires coming from left handlebar, 1 side connects to where the ignition switch plugs into which is a green wire, the red wire and the black wire from where the ignition plugs into are currently disconnected, and are not connected to nothing.  The other wire coming from the left handlebar connects to a black and white wire, think this might connect to the CDI unit?  but i'm not sure.  Thanks.

At this point it's clear that someone messed the wiring scheme up. I need you to somehow separate all these wires and photo them. Does it sti8ll have the key switch? I've looked the diagram over well and can tell you how to wire this scooter. Now we know this diagram is the sister scooter the Suzuki AY50 and even though the colors may be a little different the principal is the same. At this point it seems that the red/black is the only wire different on the diagram that goes to the CDI.

This scooter's wiring is just about like any other with the exception of power going form the R/R to the CDI. The black/white is ground.

Now do you have a multi-meter with ohm settings and do you know how to read one? If so then we can with some patience, photos and a meter re-wire this scooter to run.
