Hello all,
We made our introductions over at the new student registration...nice to meet everyone.
Now, onto business. First off, some background info. We bought a used 2009 YY250T Jonway a month or so ago, and the previous owner had no issues with it. He brought it in a Uhaul from Wisconsin, resulting in a few cracks in the body, no biggie. Not sure how often he rode it after he got here to Virginia, but he said he still rode it. We brought it over in a pick up truck, and had it sitting for a week or so in our garage while we registered it and my husband got his motorcycle permit (he rode in Korea, but not here).
So once he got the permit and helmet we ordered online, he went out for a ride in the local streets at night. No problems, until he hit a pothole he didn't see while making a left into our neighborhood and the scoot shuts down. Everything else is fine, but it doesn't start, so we call a mechanic over to diagnose the problem. He said it's the solenoid; we order and replace it; now nothing. Charge the battery fully, he says, so we do, and now it runs, but it keeps making popping noises and shutting down when idle. Change the spark plug, says another experienced mechanic, so we do (to an NGK), and the pops and shutting down are less frequent.
Now, here we are. The scooter is rideable, but it continues to make a popping sound every once in a while from, it seems, the right rear, possibly the exhaust. Also, the lights kind of seem to doze when idle. Then sometimes it sleeps after dozing when idle. A mechanic said to adjust the idle, turning it clockwise, which we did, but it still dozes, so we have the battery charging as we speak. We are assuming that if the lights and dozing and all are okay after the battery charge, to replace with a nice battery... is that a good educated guess?
One more issue, the scoot is vibrating a lot even when idle. We are newbies, so we don't know if that has anything to do with the above situation or if there is anything else going on.
Any help/advice/suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

It sounds like its running too lean, check all the vacuum lines and check your intake to make sure they are tight, have you moldified the air fiter in any way? and what do you have your idle set on?

I'm no guru, but the "hit a pothole" part makes me wonder if an electrical connection got jarred loose and consequently the flow of juice to wherever it needs to go is now intermittent. Before buying any other replacement parts or paying any more mechanics (I'm a world-class cheapskate), I'd check every single electrical connection I could get to. Unplug, examine both sides, straighten as needed, sand or otherwise clean, reconnect tightly, use tape or silicone or something to keep them tightly connected. Unfortunately, I know from my Roketa that a thorough check of electrical connections involves pulling some of the plastic panels.

Yes since you put in a new spark plug, follow the Coil wire back and check the wire connections on the COIL itself they may be loose and or touching when moved around and cauing it to loose spark when it does. Make sure they are nice and tight on the Coil Connectors crimp them with a pliers. Alleyoop

Thank you; we will check the wiring as suggested.
We had the idle between 1500 and 2000 and we don't know where the air filter is..
I did forget to mention that the temperature gauge has not budged at all since purchasing the scooter. It stays right where it is below the coldest mark. Would that affect anything at all? I think I read somewhere that there's a water tank or something of the like in the scooter...we have no idea where it is and if it is full..would that affect the temperature gauge? Again, if I'm totally off, forgive me, as I know almost nothing when it comes to mechanics.
The popping noise I mentioned actually sounds more like a quick crunching of a plastic bottle, if that makes any sense.
We went out for a 2 mile or so ride, with a 30 minute break before coming back home, to see if charging the battery helped. I think it affected it; once we arrived home, it died on its own (right in front of our garage door), and when we brought it in and tried starting two or three times, it died each time.
Anyway, that's a brief update on the current status of our ride. We will go now and check all the wiring. Thanks again for all your input/help/suggestions.

If your 2009 YY250T is like my 2011 Roketa MC-54-250B, which is AKA a YY250T, the air filter is on the left side of the scooter, underneath the plastic, just above the aluminum cover for the variator and clutch -- it's in a black plastic housing and has some hoses connected to it. Just about under your left butt cheek when you're sitting on the scoot. A little bit tricky to get to, but I can't imagine it has anything to do with your rough running/stalling problem.
Again on my Roketa, the RESERVE coolant tank is visible when you open the little panel where the fuel filler neck is located. That tank is comparable to the plastic coolant overflow tank you'll find under the hood on most late-model cars -- it has a certain constant level of coolant in it, hot or cold, and handles overflow to a point if the cooling system gets hot and the coolant expands. On my Roketa again, the actual RADIATOR CAP is accessible via a removable panel under the seat.

You've got a loose connection that is intermittingly either causing interupted DC power to the CDI or possibly the kill wire going to the CDI to ground out. I would strip it down and start in the key switch area going through the wiring and plug connectors. JR
