Just a general education question. In browsing various scoots in the 250+ class I see compression ratios between 8.x and 10.x. Is it a case of more is better, or less is better? what difference would I see in performance and engine durability?

More compression is better when the motor starts to loose compression what you loose is power. Now the motor does not produce the power it did when it had higher compression. If it looses enough compression the motor will not run. Alleyoop

So in terms of brand new scooters, a 10.x would be preferable to an 8.x because there's more "margin for error" as it gets older?

Also a higher comoression ratio requires a higher grade of petrol. 10.0:1.0 would require the good stuff 8.0:1 only needs the reg stuff

Hmmm, okay. Even on my humble Roketa, which I think is toward the 8.x end of the compression spectrum, they say to use at least 90 octane. At 75mpg I'm not complaining, of course.

Ellpee, If it says to use 90 Octane in the Chinese user manual that is equivalent to our 87 here in the U.S, There rating is different. Alleyoop
