Wifey just floored me. She's seeing how much fun I'm having on my new Roketa and says I should buy a second scoot for our summer place over in New Mexico, but a trike because of lots of gravel roads. I would also want nothing smaller than a 250 because lots of steep hills. I see loads of different ones on line, anybody have any advice about what's good and what's not, where to buy, etc.? And 2 in front vs. 2 in rear designs? My budget would probably top out around $5K, so another Chinese is probably in the cards.

For rough roads, dirt, gravel you do not want a REVERSE Trike 2 wheels in front. The Vibration and control will vibrate your arms off and tire you out trying to keep it straight. One fellow put up a Video of his Reverse 300cc Reverse Trike trying it out on a dirt road he was not pleased to say the least. Alleyoop

Great advice, Alley -- narrows down the possibilities quite a bit, as there are a slew of those two-in-front designs around that I can just ignore. I'm hoping I can find a two-in-back that's very similar to my Roketa mechanically, so what I've learned here will apply to the trike too (and maybe there'll even be some parts commonality). I've already seen some 300's for around $4K, but have only just started shopping.

The Ice Bear trikes are clones of your everyday roketa 250s and 300s. All they did was take the rear wheels off a roketa and add the swingarms for the rear axle everything else is the same as your roketas. Alleyoop

The 300cc trikes I'm seeing mostly seem to have the 278cc Jinlang engine. How does that compare in quality to the 244cc Jonway engine in my Roketa? Obviously it's bigger and so presumably more powerful and less economical. Other than that, any differences plus or minus that I should be aware of?
Are there other trikes out there that have engines other than Jinlang? I haven't found any yet. I'm only considering 250 up due to my weight and hilly terrain, and the obvious extra weight involved with a trike. 300 sounds reasonable. And -- see earlier posts -- I've ruled out two-in-front models. I'm also intrigued at the idea of EFI; I know it's great in cars, would hate to go back to the days of carburetors. Is it something I should shop around for in a scooter?

Ice bear is the only Manufacturer of the conventional ( 2 wheels in back). They have a US patent.
If I remember correctly the Jonway 244cc is a CF Moto style motor. I have worked on a few of them and I am not impressed. Saying this may get some reaction, but that is my opinion and others may have different opinions. Just like some like Fords and some like Chevys. I can say that Roketa also uses the Linihai Clone ( like Ice Bear) in some of their machines. That motor has been around for a very long time. I do not get many calls nor in shop repairs for motor issues in the IB trikes.

Stability issues, or just a hard ride? We are about 3/4 mile from pavement, up a very steep gravel road, usually considerable washboarding. Rattles us pretty good even in our cars. I'm guessing it might be as much as 7-8% grade in a couple places. Except for that we could limit ourselves to asphalt, but no way to avoid the home stretch.

Well you better off with an ICE BEAR TRIKE, the only problem I see is that the rear deck will crack from all the dips and stuff. Other than that it should handle it pretty good. Alleyoop

Yeah, based on what little bit of dirt roading I've done on the Roketa, I certainly wouldn't enjoy running up and down that hill on a two wheeler, that's for sure. Mike sounds like he's had bad experiences though, hope he'll chime in with more specifics. Regarding the rear deck, maybe one could beef it up with rubber grommets or the like to "shock-proof" it a little bit beyond OEM....

Oh yes, he has had it on dirt roads and yes you need to beef up the rear deck with rubber grommets anywhere it touchs metal. Alleyoop

Ice Bear has changed the way the rear decks mounts and have done extensive mods on the adding rubber mounting and engine mounts, since Mike bought his. Not sure how much has been done to the Compeller. The Compeller is not a huge seller. I will have to call and find out. My wife just fell for the silver color on the Cpmpeller; I actually like the looks of the others a bit better, and one of them, at least, also comes in silver. Ultimately, if I decide to buy it'll be by putting all the specs side by side and seeing which strike me as the best combination. Will no doubt be asking more questions in that regard before D-Day.
