My brother's ('oldputz', idnative1948 on previous forums) Tank keeps dying on him. His work these days is keeping him so busy he hardly has time to take a s___ let alone get on the forum. His scoot is exactly the same as mine only one week older. Lately it will die on him when he lets off the throttle to make a turn or come to a stop. Usually starts right back up. May not die at every intersection or the same number of times. Usually happens only after it's warmed up good.
This happened to me in 2007 and per 'Stan' when I was on the 'Dawg' I changed the coil. His theory was the coil was breaking down and occassionally stop providing spark. Never had another problem. I told 'oldputz' he needs a new coil; am I steering him right? Has anyone else had similar issues?

First thing before buying parts is I would Adjust the Valves. The symptoms appear to be tight valves and will not hold low rpms due to loss of compression when hot. Alleyoop

You were right on the money. I went in this am to give him a hand. The exhaust valve had no clearance at all. Got everything adjusted and we road the Tanks into downtown Boise and wandered around the city market. Oldputz's scoot didn't die on him once the entire trip.

Thanks bro! By the way, pics of your new paint job on your scoot did not do it justice having now seen it in person.

Arrrrgh! Rode to work this morning after checking vacuum and it ran like a raped ape. Did not suck on it as AO suggested, but applied vacuum none the less. Good gas flow, changed intake, new fuel filter. Nary an issue until I headed home during rush hour. Died twice, but fired right back and didn't die any more as long as I kept throttle at 2000rpm. So, what have I missed? Check valve clearance again?

Yes, not holding low rpms is almost always tight valves.
Set the EXHAUST VALVE at .005 inchs and Intake probably will be ok but if not set that at .004 inches. Alleyoop

I agree and was you sure you got the set nut tight? It could have backed off? Also if the valves are still good on the question of the coil, yes they can fail along with the CDI when it heats up or even not produce a real good spark but one that is good enough for it to run. Do the spark plug test and make sure you have a good blue spark not a orangish looking one.
Also check the wire connections to the coil from the CDI and the spark plug boot or cap that plugs on the spark plug, another area that can give trouble like this.

Already checked the spark, nice and blue. Last go round I did replace CDI and coil. The frustrating thing is, you just never know when it is going to happen. Unfortunetly it does at the worst possible time
