How long do you think that the engine can take a overheating situation before damage can be done.

After riding home tonight , I made a stop and when I went to get back on the bike, I noticed that sweet smell of antifreeze. After turning the key, I also noticed the temperature Gage was pegged to the top of the Gage. During my 1/2 hour ride, I don't recall seeing the fan light go on.

So what do you think? Could I have done damage?

Hard to say? All depends on how long you rode it with it hot? Also what is the oil you use? sometimes better oils can stave off damage from heat for a spell also. You had a leak and thus air got in the system too that's why no fan.

Fix the leak, fill her up and burp the air out and you'll know real quick after running it a little. Keep a check on the oil for sure.

Well I'm not scooterless for the weekend. After taking off the lower left panel and checking for loose or non-connected wire on the radiator thermo switch, the wires were still connected.

The next step was to check for broken parts or burst hoses. When I went to take off the radiator cap I happen to notice that the cap wasn't on correctly. I guess the last time I checked the level, I didn't turn it all the way. This leading to not holding the pressure back causing it to boil over.

I checked the engine oil and no signs of antifreeze. Thank god! I'll keep an eye on it to be sure. After filling it up, burping and running the engine to temperature, the fan came on at the right temp.

Next thing is to try it on the road.

Took it out today and it didn't faltered at all. I'm impressed as to the engine itself. The rest of the bike is a different question. It,s interesting that even after a stupid mistake like I made, it keeps on ticking. Must be a Timex.

well ive been there done that on the over heating.my linhai 300 i had to burp like a baby but finally got my results.untillllllllllllllllllllllllllll this weekend when i went on a 320 mile ride with the club i belong to,the start was okay never got above the 1/2 on my meter untill about the 79 mile mark it climbed on up there that was a continious 65-70 mph run for 70 miles give a take a few stops here n there.what could cause that i can ride my bike pretty hard all day around town it goes ujp fan comes on n kicks it back down on the continious run like today different story goes up and doesnt come back down sure it was 96 HOT today in florida but all the other bikes i was riding with today never did what mine did just torn apart over this JR any ideas could it be a bad meter also my gas meter quit werking also.but yanno when it hit HOT today i never smelled over heating liek it usally does what do you think any help again would be appreciated ..sorry didn't mean to jump ahead of scooter addict

You may have already found the problem yourself linhai300. Open up the seat and remove the cover and expose the top of the engine. On the right side you'll see a single wire to the temp sensor on the engine. Check to make sure it is not loose and making good contact.

Was the fan cycling on and off like normal? 96F and a non-stop 70 miles is pushing it hard but it should stay cool. We may have to add some water wtter to your system, high 90's and high humidity is tough on any scooter.

ill check the wite thats possible around town it dont do that i can ride all day 35-45 mph even now n then 60 around town it goes up n gets knocked back down,but when i hit the interstate it went up n stayed up 1 line below hotand didnt come down till i stopped at 1 destination when we ran 60-65 it stayed at a decent 1/2 level only 1 time did it hit the Hot but most the time it was 1 line under hot it's gonna get hotter soon 96 humiture will be around 110 which sometimes is how it feels just cant figure it out yes the fan kicked on n was cycling how much water wetter should i add if i go that route now the gas guage will i have to drop the tank to fix that i know u cant get to the sensor from the top the seat frame cross member is in the way

It comes in small bottles with directions and it won't be much, remember the entire system doesn't use a full gallon of coolant.

Just to be sure check the reservoir to make sure it is at the proper level and if it's low pull the radiator cap and make sure it's full. I have seen a time that one last little pocket of air will surface after riding some, doesn't cost anything or hurt to check.

yeah i check the sensor wire its good n tight ill pull the cap off again and look but the day of the 250 mile trip i looked to make sure resivor was full to the line and it was i also got out there this am on center stand let run it didnt even make it to the 1/2 mark n went back down when fan kicked on n knocked it back down to cold...so that is cycling correct im going on another trip this weekend thats about 200 miles give or take a few here n thereits a really good riding scooter if i could just get the gas guage to work properly n the heating fixed for what i have it works fine

reservoir was full to the line all connections are solid ,ill get some water wetter friday an try that before my trip saturday.is there and easyer way to get the the tank sensor with out dropping the thing lol and how difficult is it to drop it if you can give me some insight on it.oh dang guess friday ill reopen the radiator cap n see if its full there if not that ill use that space for water wetter thnx JR

JR, if that connector on the heat sensor for the temp gauge is not tight does it effect when the fan comes on and off?

No the temp sending unit is on top of the engine and it sends a siganl to the temp gauge only, has nothing top do with the fan coming on.

The fan is constrolled by the sending unit on the bottom left of the radiator. It's a thermoswitch. When the temp comes up to the units set point on the temperature then it closes the switch and turns the fan on.

The best thing I can say is make sure that your radiator cap is working correctly.

As far as for burping the engine, the best way I've found to do this is to fill up with as much antifreeze as possible. Next is to disconnected the small hose next to the thermostat on the the engine. At this time you will notice that the level in the filler neck will lower. Add more antifreeze in until you you see fluid flowing from the connection on the engine. After this, reattach the hose and finish filling it up.

IMO, even on the hottest days, your temperatures is going to run high.
