it would be fine if i charge people $50 / hour to fix their scoots,
as long as i come in here, get the answers i need
{to pretend to be a mech} and fiddle around long enough to get it running

use your expertise to find the answers,
then i make all the money!!!!!!

my buddy brought over his 50cc tao tao 50, it won't start...the carb and fuel lines are fine, as ive replaced them with spares i had, i put some gas on the end of the spark plug, and it starts right up and runs perfect, but wont start again when i shut it off, any ideas? please get back to me ASAP as he's paying for this to be fixed.

First of all Terrilee you pointed out your opinion and we know where you stand AND I respect your opinion and IMO I don't think everyone here totally agreed that it was alright for what this young man was doing in fact on your "would you help" thread the way I read it it was about split down the middle on the opinions? Four said no, four said maybe and one said why not? Maybe isn't a real yes or no?

Myself I did not place a vote because I have mixed feelings and you didn't give that option on the poll. But I'm thinking by reading the thread on dawg that this is what I would call one of these modern day kids who IMO wasn't or doesn't have the same what I call old time values that some of us were raised with. From a stand point of how I feel about my forum and how I just want to help people I would not be in favor at all of what he was doing, just like I said on the other thread I don't understand why he even told anyone of the $50 at all?

Also I'm not so sure of the arrangement he and his buddy had, if the buddy just wants it fixed and said it's worth $50 and doesn't care about how it gets fixed then I might join the maybe crowd?

I think you have addressed this in a polite and very straight forward manner and all who know you know how you stand and it's very apparent you consider this very distasteful to say the least.

For those who see it the other way and don't mind helping them IMO we need to respect their opinion as much too. We all have the right to disagreee or agree.

I'm sure the boys are young , with the lack of experiance most likely it will not go on for long . If the guy can't get past the simple . He will move on to other things . I do service work if it does not work I don't get paid . I'm only willing to put limited time into a job . If I can't do the job I know I can't do the job . I don't want to waste my time or anyone elses .

I have been talking to a friend of mine with an auto repair shop about serviceing scooters . I don't know all scooters well , but in the event I get stumped , it would be great for me to come on a forum and get some tech help . I come in here and offer advice to others , so if I was looking to turn a profit working on scooters . Would that mean the forum should not offer any help .
I'm sure the guy was under 18 and I have no problem with the kid keeping busy and out of trouble and makeing a buck . I'm sure he got more hours in that scooter then the $50 his friend paid him .

in the mid 80's one of the girls in my area got stuck with a bad remote alarm , I by passed it to get the car running I was like 15 years old . Her dad gave me $20 and drove the car away .

I would rather see the kid out of trouble in here . if he gets a few dollars big deal . If he was asking how to pick a lock or bypass a house alarm or start a scooter without keys , thats a different ball game .

Read the other threads, great response terrilee Used to have the same in photography, I can understand your problem with him. I don't think that he's charging is the biggest issue, it's that he doesn't see the problem. Photography has kids / soccer moms / dentists picking up cameras from walmart and shooting weddings (some for free others for money, mostly for money) and landing themselves in trouble. I help some and not others, the ones I do help are the ones that genuinely want to learn and have respect for the job and understand the position they are in, the ones I do not help are the ones who believe they are owed help and that they haven't made a mistake. For me it's all in their attitude. Some people will only learn if you don't help them.

I'm going to echo Mauiboy and TV and see their points of view well. The attitude part like Maui said is a lot. Had this young man came on and handled this different or even been a long time member helping the scooter community it probably would not have been as badly percieved. But he joined with one mission and will probably never been heard from again and the way he did handle it I can see Terrilee's or anyone else like her seeing the real problem with this. IMO what he done was tacky and tasteless and most of the time people like that don't succeed even if they do get help.

But I also see TV's point of view and support it also from several stand points. One TV is a good standing, helpful and contributing member trying to help people all the time and just for the pleasure of trying to help. He also is selling some parts and going the extra mile on them like testing to insure cutomers have a working product when they get it. Would I have a problem with him asking for help on fixing something should he decide to work on them? Absolutely not!

We have others here that sell and fix scooters and contribute countless hours on lots of forums helping people just out of the goodness of their heart and because it's good business to help people. Would I have a issue with them asking a question? Absolutely not!

But here's what irks me sometimes and this happens everyday. Some people sign up just to look at the tech section or for a manual and get what they need and never open their mouth, doesn't bother me in the least but the ones who sign up ask a question and get help or answers and then never open their mouth to let you know if their problem was fixed or what happened?

I get upset some over that for two reasons, one it's just nice to know that they are going and this forum helped, two if they tell us what's wrong and whether it was a suggestion this forum gave or they found something else it's nice to know and it also can be helpful to another not knowing person on this forum or a future one that signs up and has the same problem. Knowing the final outcome can mean a lot sometimes.

The last thing that gets me sometimes is parts sellers that are members, sell someone something especially the generic fits all stuff and when a person finds out the part won't fit or hook up without having some good basic mechanical or electrical knowledge to make it work are no where to be found when that person who bought the part from them is in trouble.

Now I'm not talking about dealers who give good support at their store and over the phone but part sellers who don't know a lot about scooters especially the electrical and sell this fits all stuff when they themselves don't know how to make it work. Then we have these people sign up ask for help and they too the part seller is a member and they don't open their mouth.

Am I going to tell these people to go to the parts dealer? Nope, just going to try to help them the best I can. That's what it's about to me.

But when this happens it makes you feel so good.

This is not about getting a pat on the back, it's just nice to see a person who came on and needed help with several issues just simply saying Thank You. $50 wouldn't touch the value of this.

You tell it like it should be JR. Forums are to help, be it newdes or people who have been scooting a long time. Not something to try to make money with. If i could not fix something through a forum, then it is time to go to a dealer or spend more time reading looking and asking questions. issue31 (John)

Very good points JR! I agree with you 100%!

Not to blow my own horn, so to speak, but I consider myself one of those dealers you talked about giving support at my shop as well as on the phone. I also give advice on forums, All of this is free of charge. I enjoy helping people and get great satisfaction when my advice has helped them get back on the road. I was not born with all this knowledge, I had mentors and folks that helped me when I was young without charging me. This made me a firm believer in the saying, what goes around, comes around.

I have had a couple people tell me I should charge for a Tech line. I just can't do that. It isn't me.

Does it help my business? Yes it does! Word of mouth is the best advertising there is. I have sold some machines and parts to customers who have told me that so and so said I helped them and I was the "go too" guy. There have been some very positive comments made by other members about me and that just makes me feel really good. I wish I had more time to spend on the boards but, I do have to make a living too.

ok jim question for u.

now , pretend u have been reading some kids posts,
& its apparent he cant fix his own scoot.
then he comes and asks for help because hes fixing his "buddies" scoot, for money. then it changes to some riding buddy, then it changes to just some guy.
BUT
he needs the help NOW because he charged this guy to fix it
and the guy is coming to get it.

what ur opinion now ?
