hi everyone not been on here for a while right ive got this problem with my 2002 yamaha jog r air cooled scooter it wont start from cold unless you place your hand over the intake on the carb to draw petrol into the engine with this done it will start and run perfectly and you can turn it off then with just 1 kick on the kickstarter it fires up right away but leave it for half an hour the b*****d wont start unless you cover the carb inlet again things i have checked for are good spark fit new spark plug stripped and cleaned out carb (3 times) checked autochoke not stuck open (ok) replaced reed valve block sealed all inlet gaskets replaced inlet manifold drained fuel tank and refilled with fresh fuel checked compression (around 90-100 psi) checked for blocked exhaust can anyone help me sort it out before i lose my rag and treat it to 5 litres of petrol and a box of matches thank you ken

:DPROBLEM SOLVED after checking for ac from stator this proved ok so i swapped a cdi unit over from a working scoot i had and bingo we now have a spark i then brought a new performance cdi off ebay and got the engine running but even at full throttle it would only run at 1000 rpm cleaned out carb no improvement swap carb from running bike still no improvement so off came the valve cover to check valve clearences both were spot on on next step check cam timing but when flywheel was set at tdc cam sprocket was out of line reset cam timing and turn engine over by hand and valves were hitting piston WTF so reset cam timing back to normal and turned engine over with screwdriver in plug hole to find tdc and lo and behold timing mark on rotor was 90 degrees after tdc mark on casing so off came the cooling fan and bugger me the crank nut was finger tight off came the rotor and the woodruff key had sheered off 1 30p woodruff key later everything was set up and reassembled fuel turned on ign turned on and 2 kicks later VAROOM YEE HAR ENGINE NOW RUNS LIKE CLOCKWORK only thing is is slow to pull away from stand still but then again its only a 50cc 4 stroke ped might try fitting 2.7 g rollers in the variator as its got 4g rollers fitted as standard so lighter roller should keep it in lower gear longer so it can pull away quicker

hi jr it can't be valve timing as the malaguti is a 2 stroke hence no valves lol im' begining to suspect than the piston rings have gone allowing compression to leak past the piston and pressurising the crankcase causing the blowback out the carb

hi everyone i'm back after doing battle with the ay50 ive changed the blown head gasket and she starts a lot easier now just takes 1 or 2 kicks and away she go's anyway the problem i have now is if you give it a lot of throttle it smokes like a b*****d other symptoms are when you open her up it sounds like she's the engines running rich and if you open the throttle gently the smoke isn't so bad and the engine picks up smoothly any ideas folks

hi jr great news ITS ALIVE ;D ;D ;D i picked up the regulator which cost me £12 and some other bits and pieces today plugged in the r/r to the socket i showed you and bingo we have got a spark so buoyed up by this success i put fresh fuel and oil into the tanks refitted the spark plug and 3rd prod of the kickstart and amid a hugh cloud of smoke she burst back into life i was well chuffed but my joy was cut short when i discovered that the head gasket had gone and water was pissing out of the exhaust i'm not too worried tho as its a simple job to do and the spare parts costs peanuts the other goodies i got today were a full set of body work with only minor scuffs for £20 trouble is they are dark blue in colour and i want to keep the kaytana red but thats nothing a couple of hours preperation and some spray paint can't cure i will start a project thread in the other section so you can keep progress of how shes getting on thanks for all the help you and other members on this forum have given me without you help i would have given up on her ken

hi jr thanks for your advice and the wiring diagram on the parts download i have saved it to my laptop and after a morning studying the wiring diagram i appears that the missing part is the voltage regulator (after decoding the dutch) lol after reading some other posts on different forums it appears that the regulator is part of the ignition circut hence why there is no spark there is someone breaking a ay50 about 15 miles from me so i'm gonna give them a buzz and see if they have got a regulator in answer to your question how did the engine bay get so dirty the lad i brought the scooter off told me some theiving little gits stole it and had been riding it off road before nicking some bits off it before the police recovered it Uploaded with ImageShack.ushere is a photo of the wires going into the plug top wire white with blue trace 2nd wire yellow 3rd wire red 4th wire black and white bottom wire yellow and white
