Engine off, key off:
Remove the negative lead off the battery and measure the voltage of the battery.
If you read 12+vdc then re-attach the negative lead, turn the key on and re-measure.
Turn the key on but do not start... and measure the battery voltage again..
If the battery voltage drops to almost 0 then the battery is toast..
As a note, the stator/charge voltage will look erratic on DC without a battery to smooth it out....
If the battery seems fine then you have a regulator problem or...
Batteries can read great with no load but dead with a load like the lights. Called an open cell.
