Preferred method for taking off variator is use of Impact wrench. Some of the guys have an electric impact wrench. I use an Air Impact wrench. Some have used breaker bar to get it off but you have to be very careful holding the variator from turning while loosening the nut. It has resulted in many broken variator fan fins. I have broken a few my self and had to replace the fan. There are a couple of good Videos that show how this can be done I will try and look some up tonight and get posted if someone does not beat me to it.

So a little update. I just got back from riding around for almost an hour. Acceleration was perfect, top speed was between 70-75, ran smooth as silk..... And the noise was gone when I was driving. The noise is only apparent while idle. I even ducked my head down under my windshield so I could hear the engine purring clearly and no noises out of the ordinary. As soon as I came to almost a complete stop, I hear the noise again...... Que? Might want to take off the Variator and take a look it almost sounds like the Dust shield is loose and clattering around.

you do not need hi pressure as you are really only using it to keep the bowl full on the carb. so 2 to 4 psi should be fine.

Valves are at the top. Definitely try doing the valve adjustment and anything else that could be the issue.

Heard from a couple people this could simply be the valves tapping. Now if only I had any clue how to adjust those lol ..... Someone pass me the greenhorn Viking helmet This is way Easier than doing the Valve Adjustment on the Linhai style. Watch the Video in link below and do exactly as it says. It is easier than doing the electrical work on the bike. thescooterprofessor.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=250ee&action=display&thread=42

Yeah it does sound like a knocking but it's been pretty steady as to how loud it is. How do I check that bearing? I didnt know what it was until it went way bad and it went CLUNK and started running like crap and had NO Power. If it is that lower bearing the only way to replace it is to replace the whole crank shaft assembly. It is a complete motor rebuild. Like you I was only decent at electrical work. Well this made me pretty good at Mechanical. It was a major challenge for me since I was trying to get parts from the crappy dealer I had. So motor was tore apart in September ish. by the time I got the correct parts to do the job and put it together it was April. What helped me is Taking very DETAILED Pictures of ever single step of taking it apart. There is a detailed manual that shows exploded views of the Honda motor which is identical to ours. All in all if I had all the parts I needed at the time I probably could have taken apart and put back together in less than 3 days even not knowing what I was doing. It took me a bit longer because memory not as good almost 6 months after I took it apart. I was surprised it was Not near as hard as I thought it was going to be.

When mine got louder it was like a clattering knocking sound from the lower end. On mine it was the lower rod arm bearing was going out. Again mine was a knocking sound that progressively got worse.

Unless there is something wrong with your existing box dont think you need one. Wobble with the needle could mean that the cable is binding or maybe loose.
