I just wondered if this was the case in other states? In HI it is standard practice if not law to move over on to the hard shoulder / emergency lane if an emergency vehicle is seen or heard, no matter which side of the road it is on (as they frequently need to 'borrow' the other side of the road). It was the same back home in the UK. I just wondered if it was country wide as there is usually a tourist or two who thinks we are all just getting out of their way because they're special lol. I've seen a fire truck nearly take out a SUV because the fire truck needed to use the 'wrong' lane going through an intersection due to a bus not being able to get out of the way. It is rather annoying, lives genuinely are at stake, it could be somebody in an ambulance heading for a medivac or somebody who needs a police officer etc. More than anything, I just don't understand what's going through the persons head when all of a sudden every other car on both sides leaves the road, doesn't it suggest they may wish to do the same?

Yes, here in the US it is customary to move over and stop when some emergency vehicle is approaching either from the rear or coming at you. Alleyoop

Thanks alleyoop, I wasn't sure if I was being overly harsh. I know in Cali everyone moves over as well, wasn't sure about the other 48 states. It's weird, some people just don't see the obvious around them, like when the surf is huge (like crazy 30+ ft huge and cross swells) and even the kama'aina aren't in the water and are stood on the shore with their chins on the ground, somebody still wants to go for a swim, normally with one of those yellow float aids around their chest. 2 months ago some mum asked if she should let her 13 yr old kid out to surf in a huge cross north and east swell, not a single other person out there, all sat on the shore with their coolers nursing beers. I mean really, if the locals ain't in the water theres a damn good reason right? You get tired pulling them out of the water, not to mention the risk it puts others under having to swim out there to pull em out.

I just m moved to Arizona so I have picked up their drivers manual. So coming from Colorado I now have official evidence of the drivers rules.
Both Colorado and Arizona have taken space to tell drivers that when ever a emergency vehicle approaches from front or rear with lights and sirens on, you must pull to he right of the road and stop till they have passed. Police, fire engines, ambulances were examples given.
Now remembering from Ohio where I grew up, following an emergency vehicle was considered wrong and you could get a ticket for doing so. In my home town they would occasionally run a fire truck out and down into a dead end road. The police would then shut the road off and ticket anyone in there that had no business to be there. Some were good, volunteer firemen, and some were bad, nosy people.

In Arkansas you not only better get out of the way you even move over when a policeman has a driver pulled over on the side of the road. If you are on a two lane road and cannot move over to the other lane due to coming traffic you stop and wait until you can.
Don't dare get caught holding up a ambulance or fire truck with lights and sirens on someone will get your license number.
Most of all school buses! Tragically a driver of a bus hit a 6 year old about two years ago due to not paying attention and the child lost their life. They were sentenced with manslaughter and are serving time.
But what gets my goat is the cell phone thing, scary just plain scary, and I've read where legislation on the federal level is being drawn up to stop it, when they do fatality statistics will drop.

Ending the use of cell phones in a car is quite easy. Just have to get beyond the lawyers. Cell phone jamming is very common in certain public places like the better restaurants, theaters, opera and symphonic halls. All that is required is to put a small jammer into each car and if the wheels are turning the jammer comes on, when the wheels stop turning the jammer turns off. The 911 signal could be set to a frequency that is not jammed so the phone is always ready for emergency. This 911 solution will take care of the lawyers that don't want the phones blocked due to emergencies. Hire a scientist or engineer before hiring a lawyer. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_phone_jammeror just Google 'cell phone jammer' .

Great to hear it seems to be pretty universal! It just makes sense and is common courtesy. You never know when you'll be the one needing that emergency vehicle. It's just sad some people are oblivious.
Re cell phones, I agree entirely, however the problem with jammers or making the phones stop working when they know they are above a certain speed (technically probably the easier route as most phones these days have gps which allows the phone to know what speed it is doing) is that how do you tell if it is the driver or the passenger?
The law currently being put forward is a joke, it outlaws using a cell phone if you are the driver EVEN via a handsfree device (I'm ok with that), but heres the kicker, you can use a hands free device if it has been fitted by the manufacturer i.e. built in by Ford. Now stop for a second and think about who has been throwing money at politicians for this one! A $50 hands free kit from costco is bad, but a $600 one from the car manufacture makes everything safe. Lobbying baby!! It just lacks credibility. Normally if I'm in a cage I'm a passenger, frequently I'm actually working on the way too and from shoots and (I am reluctant to use the word need here) use of my cell phone makes life very easy and turns dead time into productive time. Right now we do have a law banning the use of cell phones by drivers (in HI) other than via a hands free kit, it's often ignored by drivers and police. The penalty is minor. They need a sliding scale of punishments that might actually deter people, like first infraction = public caning of the feet, second infraction = confiscation of vehicle and resale to benefit medical charities and being dropped off in the channel with the sharks and left to swim home. Cruel and unusual punishment isn't unconstitutional, its a necessity.

Ask an engineer, they may be able to design one. Mount in the hub of the steering wheel with a 2 or 3 foot range. Passengers sitting away from the driver would then be free to use the phone.
I had not thought that the cell phone would have much need but your tale says some may find it useful. I am not a phone person, never was, never will be. I only talk net on the phone. If someone wants to chat I will break it off and attempt a personal meeting. When my phone rings and it is a recording I hang up rather than listen. If it is political I hang up. If it is a wrong number I say so and hang up. If it is a wrong number multiple times I tell them to quite calling as I am tired of answering. On some wrong numbers, collectors or school offices I wait till I get a chance to speak and then tell them my number is falsely being used and please stop calling. There is always the threat for calling the NO CALL folks if they don't stop calling.
It is always amazing to me to see someone driving in city traffic enter a shopping mall and then walking into the stores still talking on a phone. To my thinking that is somehow not necessary and having jammer's seems like a good idea to me. But I am just a hard headed person I guess.
And I agree with what you said about those built in phones and GPS built right in. I really don't want that built in stuff and it is far too pricey, I would rather have a personal GPS that allows me to update maps as I decide and sometimes it is free. I asked my Realtor why she had a personal GPS and she said that getting the car up dated would cost a big price but her personal GPS came with free updates. To me those built in consoles are just another distraction for the drivers. The personal GPS came with a suction mount so she could hang it up high so she did not have to turn her head to see it. And there was a little lady inside that box that kept telling her where she was and where to turn.
OK, I will shut up now. I don't like phones but I do enjoy forums and emails. .

Here in Vegas it is LAW that you must pull to the right and stop if any emergency vehicle is within sight or sound. Unless the highway is divided, An Island/ wall between lane directions. I see people in such a hurry they break this law all the time. It's a shame really. What if... An ambulance on it's way to rescue YOU is involved in a crash and never shows up because of someone on a cell phone? Does anyone have more info on cell jammers??? Screw the added fee to install one in new cars... I want one on my scoot with a mile radius ;D ;D. No calls within a mile of me riding. That would be cool

around here every time you see a cop drive by he has a cell phone jambed in his ear. they seem to do that so they don't have to use the radio and divulge secret shit on the radio that civilians can listen to. I am all for banning cell phones to a driver including cops.

No I didn't but, Now i did. Funny how they are illeagal to operate in every country except the USA. You can own one but just don't use it. OK, How do I get a Permit? One can dream Just Joking around but, it would be cool. Then again, ya might get hit by someone trying to figure out why the phone wont work.... Just yesterday A teen driver pulled in front of me after making eye contact while on her phone. She looked in my eyes and still pulled out in front of me. It's now legal to talk and drive in Vegas but, NOBODY cares because they HAVE to Tweet about whatever....... Also. It is a good idea to pull over and wait a minute cause like Luke said, you can follow behind and breeze through traffic!!!!!!
