ABS vs. Black body plastic - the fix By trailheadmike (Read 935 times)

After my recent deer encounter I started to repair my scooter. I decided to use Weld-on 16 for the body panels. I read all the threads about plastic welding but if I wait to do it (and do it right) I'm not sure I'll ever get to ride again! I'll live with the visible cracks. Unfortunately the Weld-on did not work on the black plastic, so I guess I'll try the plastic welding on that. I tried J&B on this plastic before as per some threads suggested but it doesn't work well.

I was just wondering if anyone had a preferred method for the black body plastic before I begin. Thanks in advance.

I have plenty of broken plastic Mike , If you figure it out let me know . My plastics are destroyed form when I went down .

I have personally welded the black plastic with some pretty good success. I take some super glue and glue the part together for a nice close fit. Then I turn it over on the back side and I take a trigger type soldiering gun and I use black zip ties, yes the black eletrical ones medium sized and slowly melt them on the crack again from the back side.

I do just a little at a time and in my cases by doing it on the back side the welds were out of sight so my thought was holding power not looks. By just melting it on again a little at a time I don't risk a melt through and after all is said and done it will hold. When I got my wifes scooter I had some cracked places on the plastic handle bar cover and even though they sent me a new replacement part it took some time to come in and since the weld was so unnoticable I just left it on and put the new piece up.

I have used this assortment of plastic welding rods from Harbor Freight. It covers different types of plastics.

I like to use an old iron from a wood-burning kit. I find it's just the right temp and won't burn through the plastic piece that's being repaired.
