ellpee I think I done that test before... but my test was like the following I unplugged and ground the wire and it peg the Temp. gauge ( the connection was two wire connected to a metal piece that plugs onto the thermostat temp. sensor) so did I test that wire right? that pic shows what I am talking about that wire connection. Thanks The picture you show does indeed show the temp gauge sensor/sending unit. If you ground that wire and the temp gauge pegs out then the gauge is fine, simply replace this sensor. JR

OK, yeah, what JR said. Could swear mine was only one wire, but whatever, results count. The sensor's a fairly cheap item on line, I paid $16.50 for the Magnum version. That "peg test" tells you the gauge is almost certainly doing what it should. If it's still behaving in funny ways under normal running conditions, one of the OTHER TWO wires on the gauge is suspect, either bad 12v coming in, probably on a black wire, or a bad ground going out, probably on a green wire. That circuit, however, black in/green out, does nothing more than feed the bulbs or LEDs or whatever in the gauge. As I mentioned, the other circuit, black in/wire to the sensor, are what controls the gauge readings.

Question - my scooter is a BMS JMSTAR CF250, a Honda Reflex clone. My temp gauge has 3 connectors but only 2 wires go to it. There are no lights inside it. Recently I had to oil the speedo and took out the instrument panel. Speedo is good now - no noise. But the engine temp is now reading very high on the gauge and goes up much more quickly than before. Is it possible that the gauge wires are selectable? That one connector is for a certain voltage and another for a different voltage, based on what temperature sensor is installed? I actually put in a new thermostat just in case and no real change. Years ago I had an overheating problem that finally cured itself so I thought maybe it would be a good idea to change the thermostat.
I don't think I am crazy - there are 3 possible connections and only 2 wires. No. I haven't tried switching yet as I would have to take apart the windshield, etc.
Anyway, any thoughts out there?

I went through the same thing with mine. I decided rather than spend hours trying to run down the problem, I would get a digital heat guage from e-bay, just cut a round hole somewhere in the dash, then I wired the fan up with a toggle switch. It runs so cool, I think I have turned the fan on once in two years! I suspect that I had wiring problems, and that can drive you crazy, if you let it. Enjoy your scoot.
