My name is Mark and am new to the forum, though have been viewing others posts for the past couple of weeks in search of common issues that I have been having with a Schwinn Laguna 50cc that I purchased (not running) from my next door neighbor. It is a 2012 with only 223 miles on it, and looked great. The ignition switch had been removed and the CDI was missing when I bought it, so I purchased the missing parts and on my first attempt to start the scooter, the new CDI started smoking and melted. I quickly unpluged it and was stumped on what had just happened. After this worse case scenario, I started searching the web for answers, and can't seem to find the solution, but have seen one thread on this forum with a common denominator, but no answer was ever given. It seems as though the kill switch wire to the cdi has 12vdc on it when the key switch is in the on position! Is this normal or could it be that my new ignition switch is sending this voltage because of being wired wrong? With out the original key switch to look at, I found one with the same plug end on it and with all the pins lined up and with common colored wires except one. The odd wire is black and the mate for it on the harness is purple! Please help me solve this issue!

OK first ting is we need to know if you did indeed get the right parts and no 12Vdc to the kill wire is not correct but if it is a DC type CDI then a 12Vdc feed wire is needed. So we've got to figure out what system you got and see if you got the right CDI, if you plug a Ac type CDI in when a DC one is needed then whoa Nellie!
Going to need a few pictures of:
CDI CDI plug in with wire color descriptions Key switch plugin with again wire colors.
Got to see if we have a diagram for this scoot.

Thank you for the speedy response! The CDI wire harness is a 4/2 with a blue/yellow,black/yellow and green on the 4 plug connection, and a black/white, black/red on the 2 plug connection!

What colors are on the 2wire plug for the cdi. If you can plug the cdi in aorta we can are position of the wires would be best.

did you measure the voltage on the voltage on the black/red with the key on is/was it 12vdc , or you will need to crank the engine and read in acv 35-120vac ?

John, I was wondering if both bottom pins on the 4 prong CDI plug are ground! When I first got the scooter, the ground wire was pulled loose from the pin inside of the plug on the harness. I removed the female pin and replaced it with another short piece of wire with a new pin on it and soldered and shrink wrapped the splice back together! Could I have possibly put it back in the wrong place?

The scooter has great compression and the coil is about 18 inches long and looks like the one in your link but is not orange!

on the 4 wire plug I don't think it makes a difference the greens on the bottom . I'm thinking you just got a bad cdi . The electrical parts I sell I test . I would think it was a defective cdi I don't see anything to make me think otherwise . As far as the ignition switch goes , when the switch is off , green to black/white should be closed , red to purple opened . When in the run position red to purple should be closed and black/white to green opened .
unless there is something I'm missing , if anyone else sees something I'm not speak up .

I will check the switch in the morning with the information that you passed along to me! If there is something wrong in the opening and closing it might be why I have DC power on my kill switch wire at the CDI! Some thing melted that CDI and I really hate to replace it for it to happen once again! Plus I have found a great interest in the mechanical side of fixing and repairing, and would love to learn more on the electrical part! I am humble and very thankful for all the advice I will receive on this site!
