What is the skill level of cleaning the variator??
Good Morning
I was able to get the head lights working by playing with the wiring and fuses. Going back to the hesitation/shaking when you first give it gas for the first 5 seconds or less, you mentioned regarding cleaning the variator
The variator, I believe, is under the side cover where the belt is. Do you have to remove the variator and take it apart? It looks like a lot of time and work to do this, am I correct? I am afraid once I take it apart, if I have to take it apart, I can run into more problems than it is worth.
I can understand cleaning something that is attached and together versus dismantling it and finding myself having a bunch of sliders and etc. You mentioned the shaft/boss. It also seems like you have to take more things apart. Is there a step by step instructions on how to clean this? Thanks, Mel

mela, i was in high school when i first dismantled and clean a scooter variator and clutch assembly,my INTEREST and CURIOSITY pushed me to do it and do it the right way...(there was no youtube back then, btw) ...if you have a kick start scooter, you have to remove the variator cover really slowly and carefully, because spring might pop up and you eventually might not able figure out how twas arranged, ....removing and cleaning the variator is pretty simple,,the only problem i see is loosening the 2 nuts one on the variator and one on the clutch.,you may need to use an impact wrench.(some people does a lot of experiment and use home made gadgets in removing those nuts but end up stripping them, ). ..if you are skeptical, better take a picture of step by step procedure while you are removing the parts so you have a referrence or guide when you assemble them.. good luck! see: cleaning scooter variator/or cleaning CVT in you tube level of difficulty 1-5: i'd say it's 3 (for a beginner) i telya, taking the variator apart is very exciting...putting it back can get even more exciting. (pls don't end up with extra bolts and nuts, when done ;D)

Mela look at this tech help thread: thescooterprofessor.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=250ccvt&action=display&thread=216Both variators are shown and even if you don't want to upgrade to sliders the removal and install is the same with your OEM rollers. As Luke stated a impact wrench makes this a lot easier to remove the nut and then it's not hard from there basically self explanatory. Carb cleaner does great to get the gooie grease out and then grease the center shaft slightly with a good lithium grease and the U slides on the back plate NO grease on the roller. Nothing to it! JR

Question: As in the picture the hub that has the fins on it, what is that called? Is the variator behind this hub with the fins?
You are talking about removing a nut. Is this the nut that is holding the hub with the fins on it?
Also, where is the boss that must be cleaned and lubricated? What other parts need to be lubricated? what parts need to be degreased? Is there any U tube videos that I can go to the library and look at that explains things in more detail? Thanks, Mel
