I wonder how many people know that Independence Day was actually declared on 2 July 1776 by John Adams when he said that "these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent states" However Americans fastened not on 2 July but 4 July because it was on the 4th that Congress formally adopted July 4 as their independence day. (America: A Narrative History, Tindall, Shi 8th ed)
Happy Independence day to ya all.

Yup,we have had a couple of dates the Declaration of Independence went through before becoming the current article--I just read that it was written by one guy,I forget which one ,Thomas Jefferson, I think,(my memory is about gone) but when the others looked at it,the original script, they could see it needed a little tweaking,so it got changed from the original text and refined until the document we see now is the final one--it was actually signed on August 2 ,I suppose it doesn't matter about the actual dates, that freedom is the important part, and we fought and got it--anyhow,thanks for the acknowledgement, happy trails, fflintstone
