This is for somebody I'm trying to help, but also for my general education. The coolant temp sensor: I understand that it has a "juice in" side and a "juice out" side that becomes active only when the coolant gets hot enough and the sensor closes a switch, letting 12v through to the fan. Does it make a difference which wire goes to which side, that is, which one gets to be "in" versus "out"? I'm thinking no, the switch is going to close and juice is going to flow either way, but heaven knows I could have that wrong.

Should make no difference as long as both terminals are isolated from the case of the sensor. A quick ohmmeter check would verify that.
