.03 +.04 =.07mm = 0.002755906 inchs
Doyso,
.05mm is to tight, .05 only equals 0.0019 in inchs ALMOST .002 inchs.
You need to set them little wider, like I said put the .03 and .04 together and use that and set it so they slide in and out easy. Alleyoop

I have a set .002-1.00mm coming from Ebay on Thursday. Are there 2 gauges in my .02-1.00mm set that is a temporary fix that's better than the valve position I have now? They're floppy strips of metal so two of them anywhere in the set can be paired for a temp fix. If not, I'll wait til Thursday and use the suggested .003 and .004.

Does your set have a .08 or a .10 if so use either one of those. .10mm is 0.0039 inchs almost .004 inchs .08mm is 0.0031 inchs just a hair over .003 inchs. Alleyoop

Cruiser says Alleyoop is incorrect. Are there any other 2 gauges I can put together to get the right size? Didn't say that Alley was wrong. You didn't say if your set was metric or in inches. I assumed inches and Alley assumed mm. Most people like to use inches because it's easy to relate to. Otherwise, you have to convert mm to inches and vice versa.

One out of two ain't bad. About the valve diagnosis: Since it is on warranty, I took it to the seller's mechanic and he adjusted the valves but didn't know the correct gap because he didn't use a gauge to do it, but guessed instead. I didn't know we could do that. No more drag. About the difficulty starting: Turns out, there was dirt in the carb and a spark plug with carbon build up already. Now it starts right up and runs better than ever.

I hope he wasn't a SCOOTER mechanic, because if he was he needs to come on the forum and learn some stuff. Alleyoop

Boobie trapped once again by an omitted little piece of information. During the mathematics of putting e.g. the .04 and .03 together, it was not mentioned that .003 equals 0.08mm and .004 equals 0.10mm. Upon purchasing the correct gauge at NAPA, both values appear on each gradation revealing that I had the correct sizes all along.

[replyingto=doyso]doyso[/replyingto]The people on Maui are clueless. The valves are adjusted and the timing was worked on and it runs great. However, the sporadic difficulty with starting hasn't been fixed. I s there anything besides e.g. valves or whatever has already been mentioned that would cause: After sitting over night, it starts but not right away e.g. after 6 tries....I drive 10 miles, shut off for two minutes then try to start and it starts right away....I drive one block, shut off for a few minutes, then the third time, it won't start at all. Any problem would have to take into account the fact that the gas recedes?...along with the lack of consistency...sometimes it happens differently.

OK, so I'm a skimmer in in the excess verbiage, but what about my ongoing problem with starting?

So long as the diagnostic limits of the starting problem have been reached, I'll defer to the mechanics here with vital signs allowing time to SP for upgrading its knowledge base. Thanks

After cleaning up the replies with foul language and replies with no helpful meaning I've put this thread back, it has educational value for future people. ,
Thanks Alley for covering this.
