My MC-13-250 (Bali) has the vertical Honda clone engine with a blocking diode. The previous owner moved it from where it was bolted to the frame and routed it's wiring so it is just laying loose in the under seat storage compartment. I don't have any charging problems and the headlights are (somewhat) adequate. I do note that when I apply the brakes the headlights do brighten up just a little bit.
My question is, does bolting the diode to the frame provide a needed ground or is it just to aid in heat dissipation?
The previous owner said that at one time he did have a charging issue but didn't know what he did to fix it. He just replaced a bunch of stuff and moved the diode.
I was getting ready to replace the tires, service the forks, paint the muffler, you know a general spring cleaning so I thought I would ask.

Bolting to the frame helps dissipate heat. There is no ground through the heat sink.

Thanks Cruiser, I kind of thought so but I wanted to be sure.

Off subject a tad, but that's not the case with the R/R, correct? Bolt to frame serves as ground?

Off subject a tad, but that's not the case with the R/R, correct? Bolt to frame serves as ground? That would depend on the regulator . John

Should have specified YY250T (Roketa) with six-wire R/R.

From memory, I think yes; three yellow on one plug, red/black/green on the other. BTW, when I extended my wires to relocate the R/R I was very, very careful to make sure each yellow went to the correct connector on the plug. Did I need to be that careful, or are they interchangeable? I know from testing that any combination of two carries more or less the same voltage....

yellows don't matter . If it has a green wire it may not be grounding where it is mounting . I don't power a regulator with being mounted .

Sorry? Don't understand what you're saying.

I think he is saying that he will not run the scoot without first mounting the regulator to the frame. I guess the statement could be taken another way.

Okay. I relocated mine to the under-seat compartment, mounted on a non-metal rack, so I added a wire from the R/R case to ground, and based on previous posts in this thread I'm just wondering if that was unnecessary.

I reread that post , I just noticed it now . I will not power a regulator or run the engine if the regulator is not mounted .
