This is just another FYI for learners like me. I hit 2000 miles recently, and while changing oil/gear oil decided to have a look at the air filter as well. Removed the cover and found a typical folded-paper filter with a sponge rubber seal where it's suppose to connect on the engine side, and a metal bracket on the other end that's supposed to hold it in place. The bracket matches up to one of the screw holes for the cover, so when everything is assembled that screw holds the filter tightly up against the outlet opening.
BUT: to my surprise after so short a time, I found that the bracket had broken into no less than five separate pieces, presumably from vibration, meaning the filter was just bouncing around loose inside the air cleaner compartment, along with the pieces of the bracket.
I manufactured another bracket from some metal strapping and affixed it with my best friend, Gorilla Glue; will check in a couple hundred miles and see if that was good enough, or if I need to upgrade to JB Weld or similar. Way too cheap to throw away an otherwise perfectly good air filter.
So as I say, just an FYI for other newbies; might want to pull that cover and have a look at your air filter situation.
